What Are Your Favorite Chicago-Area Bike Lanes, Paths & Routes?

Ok, now that we've been exploring the routes we avoid in the "Dreaded Bike-Unfriendly Streets", what are routes you prefer to take? Whether you are commuting, going for a weekend bike ride, or just heading to the grocery store, do you have some favorite bike routes?

A good read. The north side routes are some of my favorites. Nice to know we inherently find them ourselves.

Sunnyside from Lincoln to Ravenswood.

Ravenswood is a great choice from Lincoln/Grace (just above Addison) to Bryn Mawr, though I'd use Balmoral and Catalpa instead as they're one way and not as busy if you want to get over to the lake.

Southbound you have to leave Ravenswood and use Wolcott or other-Ravenswood on the other side of the tracks, though.

I like to ride from West Loop down to Bridgeport via Clinton, Harrison and Loomis (mostly by using marked bike lanes) down to 31st and then ride the north/south residential streets between 26th and 35th.

On the west side, I enjoy Hubbard west to Oakley and then up to Augusta and then riding out to Sacramento/Humboldt until Palmer Sq. and then over to Kedzie until Logan Sq. and then Logan Blvd. back east. The completed bike lane across Western is finally open and definitely eases that dreaded and lethal crossing.

I also like those routes. Loomis is such a useful one for crossing from Pilsen to Bridgeport.

South of 35th St., I like Emerald, Union and Wallace as quieter north-sound alternatives to Halsted. They have viaducts under the rail line approaching the Stock Yards industrial park, so it's possible to pass that line whether or not there are freight trains up top.

Union is interrupted by a park south of Root St., while Wallace continues as a 2-way street (with a few doglegs) as far as 47th St. North of 43rd St., Union and Emerald are one way (Emerald SB, Union NB).

Wallace is a good 2-way route all the way from 26th St. (up against the Stevenson) to 47th St.
