Good home needed for vintage British Hercules cruiser

Back issues lead me, mournfully, to sell my treasured Hercules cruiser: step-through frame, all original parts (except possibly the seat). It rides well when tuned up -- it was one of my main commuter bikes before I hurt my back -- but is very likely in need of a tune-up. The brake has always been a bit fussy, especially in the rain.

I'll be selling this bicycle during my yard sale this Saturday, July 30, at 2507 N. Monticello (west Logan Square), 9am - ?. I won't have time…

Kinzie @ Franklin Accident AM WB 7/5/11

Saw a bicycle crushed beneath a truck on Kinzie @ Franklin heading WB this morning around 9am. Ambulance present. Looked like the cyclist was heading through the stop sign as the truck turned right. Only saw aftermath.

Any word on the person's condition?

Chicago didn't make the Top Ten Best Cities for Bike Commuters?

I guess we have a long way to go to compete with these heavyweights....

America's Top Cities for Bike Commuting

Say what you want about Daley and now Rahm, but at least we're MOVING in the right direction.  We may need more state funding since Chicago is essentially broke.

Let's get naked

Last year, when our daughter told us that she was going to participate in Chicago’s World Naked Bike Ride, I’ll have to admit that it made me a little nervous. She was quick to explain (fortunately) that she was part of the security team for the event, and would be fully clothed for the entire ride. She and the other members of the security team were there largely to ensure that the group of riders stayed together and kept moving.

The first Naked Bike Ride was held in Zaragosa,… Continue

Just back from Cali

Did some great rides out there.  Hwy 1, Bodega Bay, Kings Ridge, winery roads.  Tough at times.  But no snow.  Very good supported trip.

Need bike better suited for my height

Hello Everyone,
Just found out about The Chainlink the other night while riding home in that hail storm on Wednesday. Not such a fun ride but good tip about this site from a fellow rider. Thanks so much for the info.

I am trying to get a bike that is better suited for my height. I have recently updated my "too small" bike with nice Armadillo 27" all condition tires which cost me more than the bike. My "too small" bike is old but in good condition. Looking for…

Bike To Camp Giant City State Park & Shaunee National Forest, IL

Like many Chicagoans I do not own a car. During the winter of 2010 I researched camping destinations that could be reached via bus & or Amtrak originating in Chicago. One of my destinations this summer was Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois. Using Amtrak departing Chicago Union Station I was able to purchase a ticket costing about $36.00 and $10.00 each way for myself and bike respectively. Arriving in Carbondale IL in about 5 hours I was off the train and toured the SIU farms.… Continue

Kona Prototype Band Wagon stolen from Rapid Transit Cycleshop

Be on the lookout in Humboldt Park for "Roberto" who never returned from a test ride with this bike:

2011 53cm Kona Band Wagon back:

The bike is Chrome Silver with white accents - it says KONA on the down tube

I confronted him riding it in Humboldt Park this evening at about 9:15PM just south of the Tennis Courts by California Street.

I asked him to give it back or otherwise we would get him… Continue

CCM September Map Suggestion

Check out the Freedom Ride map for September's Chicago Critical Mass for your consideration. We worked hard to make a fun ride and drove the route to be sure it works.

I will be printing map patches to give out at the Mass in hopes that it will be the route. There is a weekend long T-shirt Art Harvest Festival of art and music at the end that is free. We've got it laid out… Continue

From Evanston to Africa

I’m just an old guy (63) with an old bicycle (1978 Peugeot), but I just completed my sixth consecutive North Shore Century. If you’re not familiar with the event, it’s a round trip bicycle ride from Evanston to Kenosha, and it’s sponsored by the Evanston Bike Club.

This year was the 26th consecutive event, and it featured rides of 25,50,62,70 and 100 miles. Being a glutton for punishment, I’ve always signed up for, and completed, the 100 mile event.

I’ve long been a bicycle… Continue

Looking for local participation

I'm an avid cyclist originally from Chicago who has recently started the

Gutter Bunny Project with a fellow bike enthusiast. I have this great event planned in Chicago featuring bike inspired art, fashion show and an interactive bike you can ride featuring video of cycling footage worldwide.

I'm looking to get the word out and find support from the local cycling community. I'd love to partner with some cycling groups and pick up some sponsors to make this event a… Continue
