It never hurts to start putting a few movies on the ‘must watch’ list for cozy winter nights – or long indoor trainer rides! Has anyone seen the new HBO mockumentary Tour de Pharmacy? I’ve just added that to my own list. What are some of your favorite cycling movies? Weigh in below! My top 5:
Inspired to Ride
The Triplets of Bellville
Rising From Ashes
Bikes vs. Cars
Pantani: The Accidental Death of a Cyclist I included this movie because of the combination of riding and the story behind the mentality of racing and the toll it can take on a competitor. A fascinatingly tragic watch.
Have some favorites of your own? Share them in the comments! Martha Scheler. Hi! I’m Martha and still consider myself a newbie to cycling. I started riding in the winter of 2016 to cross train for distance running. Turns out, I love riding – in 2016 I ended up completing 6 centuries, an Ironman and over 4k miles of riding! I guess you could say I’m hooked! |

The Bicycle Thieves
In post-war Italy, a working-class man's bicycle is stolen. He and his son set out to find it.

1948, Mono, 89 minutes
BMX Bandits with Nicole Kidman.
Oh, and of course Quicksilver with Kevin Bacon as a equities trader-cum-bicycle messenger in the hilly streets of SF. 13% on Rotten Tomatoes (LOL) but I enjoyed it!
Breaking Away (trailer) has to be #1. Cutters vs. Team Cinzano! I've always wanted a "CUTTERS" bike jersey or even a t-shirt.
I would highly, highly recommend any movie about Race Across America (RAAM). "Bicycle Dreams" is available in full on YouTube (link) and is an amazing documentary about the men and women who put themselves through this non-stage endurance race, crossing the US from Riverside CA to Atlantic City NJ in ~10 days, covering 350+ miles per day and averaging <2 hours of sleep per night.
RAAM, Bam, Thank You Ma'am is a more lighthearted, but still serious, film of the New Zealand women's team ("Veloroos") relay RAAM team. (article)
Definitely "the flying scotsman" and if you can, check out "mamil" it's surprisingly good.
I like "The Flying Scotsman" and also "Breaking Away".
I'm going to have to pitch in here since I'm such a fan of watching this kind of stuff. This one is an oldie but probably one of the few cinematic masterpieces of the genre (available on itunes!):
Most notably, the builder segment:
1979's Academy Award-winning "Breaking Away"! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078902/
I've maintained a broader list of Bike/Green/Eco/Anti-Oil movies for many years at:

Somehow (maybe since the last addition was Premium Rush in 2012) I missed several of Martha's suggestions.
