Very cool. Steve, an engineer that worked on this, is a good friend of mine. He's also an avid cyclist and former Chicagoan. :-)

I'm all set for light but I'd love to have an audio loop of the bell from a Metra train for riding down Dearborn.

Ha! Priceless.

I hope this project takes off! I used to work with Steve also.

Dang, Steve seems to be a known quantity. Good guy for sure.

Looks like comments can only be left by backers.  I'd need two concerns addressed before backing: 1) what's the decibel level?, and 2) how water-proof will it be?  I like my Horn-it, but wish it had a better noise and that the trigger wouldn't fail after a couple rides in the rain.

JeffB,

Thanks for the questions!

For those with concerns that this will be TOO loud, you can adjust the volume by changing the settings on the device.

The goal was to compete with NYC street noise, where a typical bell can be impossible to hear even from a few feet away.

From our FAQ:

How loud can MYBELL get?

We have reached 105dB however we are more confident in reporting 96dB, much louder than the average bike bell. How loud is that? 90dB = Underground train, 104 dB Chainsaw.

Can I ride my bike in the rain with MYBELL?

Yes, but don’t drop it in a puddle. Our design requirement is a minimum of IP63 water resistance rating (roughly equivalent to heavy rain), and we’re shooting for IP65 (roughly equivalent to a hose down). Check out this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code

Best,

Steve

You can program it to play any sound you can get into a digital format (recorded, downloaded, digitally generated...). You load new sounds through the USB cable (it's a water-resistant USB connector).

Could it be programmed to sound like a bicycle bell?  I mean, that sound is iconic and immediately recognizable...

Steve is the guy to talk with as he is behind this project. Thanks for stopping by.

@Serge,

I'm not sure what type of strap you are familiar with. These are intended to be very durable and are similar to the molded urethane backcountry ski straps used in demanding environmental conditions by outdoor athletes year-round. From Backcountry.com:

Not sure about other qualities of this device, but this strap will not survive for more than a couple of months of everyday riding, especially if one will take the horn on and off all the time. Spoken from experience.

HornIt mounts on a handlebar just like a headlight. Much more durable, in my opinion (and experience).

Steve,

You seem to have a personal fan club here. When are you coming back to Chicago again so we can do a MYBELL Ride?

I will actually be in Chicago for a bit over a week in July. We don't have too many MYBELL prototypes, but I'm working on bringing one to demonstrate!

They work on Divvy bikes as well -- you can see this if you watch the Kickstarter video.

If anyone has been thinking about supporting MYBELL on Kickstarter, we really appreciate every contribution and are trying to keep the strong momentum going. For lower pledge amounts, the $25 level reflective t-shirts are really cool. I believe those will be shipping as soon as they can be made up after the campaign is funded, in plenty of time for warm weather night riding.
