The Ford brothers, who famously hate cyclists, are now almost history. Yea!

"What I compare bike lanes to is swimming with the sharks. Sooner or later you're going to get bitten... Roads are built for buses, cars, and trucks, not for people on bikes. My heart bleeds for them when I hear someone gets killed, but it’s their own fault at the end of the day." - Rob Ford 2012

How unfortunate. Hopefully there will be enough progressive voices to find a reasonable balance. There's such a huge need for better accommodations for peds, cyclists and transit users there.

They're down but not out. Despite all of his problems, Rob is still a city councilman and dispute a late campaign start and the bad press of being Rob's brother, Doug didn't get completely trounced in the mayoral race. The fact that they're hanging on at all after the year they've had speaks to the power of their constituency.
I wonder how Toronto's cycling community has gotten on in the last year. I hope good changes did take place.
I think there is cautious optimism that the new mayor, John Tory, "gets it" that bicycling is a solution, not a problem.

Also it probably can't hurt that the long destructive reign of Steven Harper is over. We whine (and rightfully so) about the shortcomings of our two party system, but our more sensible neighbor to the north suffered (and the environment of the entire planet suffered) from decades of selfish, short sighted (aka conservative) leadership from its prime minister who would not have had the post if the liberal/progressive vote had not been consistently split between the two major left parties.
