Has anyone found it neccessary to kick a car door to get drivers attention?
Maybe, knock a window?
Last week on Chicago Ave I had a Taxi on my tail who then kept crowding into my lane.
I had to fold his mirror after 3 rd time.
When he tried to squish me I booted his Taxi , pulled over to sidewalk and stopped, He sped off.

We didn't get the plate#. but plenty of people came over and and ambulance was called. He didn't deserve slap in anyway. Ive flipped people off after they came too close to me, nothing ever came of it though. Like Skip said, it was also a reaction, I didn't intend to, I just lost my cool. the best part was seeing him stick the knife in the tire. maybe not what I would have done... but I hope he got a flat.
If you can take your hand to reach out and tap, knock or slam on a car it's not like you are avoiding an imminent accident. You are teaching some kind of lesson, or just being a dick. It's like a very intrusive version of honking a horn. That said, I do it all the time. But I make a judgment on how likely the driver is to get out and throw down.
Cars have the advantage in almost every way, physically, psychologically and the law is usually on their side. All bikes have is maneuverability and to some extent the ability to accelerate or stop faster than a car. So I think it's better to be using and honing your cycling skills than to be a road bully who goes around kicking and yelling.
Another goto is pulling the keys out of the ignition and tossing them. Then they pull out a gun and the fun is over :(

Kick smash and yell... it's the only thing that gets their attention. If they get "nuttier" on you -- endanger your safety -- invite them to exit their vehicle for a discussion. Then slam their door on them as they are exiting, or throw the bike on them and pummel happily away!
I saw a diagram measuring the 3 feet from the bicycle frame. If I hold out my arm to signal a turn, my fingertips are about 3.5 feet from the bicycle frame.
I've always thought a diamond tipped stylus extending three feet left from the center of my bike would be an interesting accessory.
Add it to a flash flag?
In my experience, even if they are ready to hit you, motorists freak out when you car spank them. So I stopped doing that because I was afraid they'd do something to me.
Now I just scream (like they hit me because they are about to) and they think they hit me so the immediately move away from me. It's pretty great because my life is saved and they know they got way too close and they aren't mad or full of rage.
