Impatient, ignorant or just mad? Sheridan road again! I don't normally ride the big roads, Western,North ave. Past 94, Broadway...but it's a holiday weekend with little traffic but a woman had to tell me bikes weren't allowed on Sheridan as she waited for me to pass her so she could leave her building. 2 seconds and I'm on my way and so are you, so what's the big deal. As the pic shows not exactly bone crushing traffic.

You have had an encounter with a Nag Hag !

I don't think bikes are allowed on the sidewalk on that stretch of Sheridan and they really enforce it. Maybe she was confused.

I'll go with impatient and/or ignorant.  Bikes aren't allowed on the Sheridan north of Lake Forest and through the ravines if I remember correctly, but the north side of Chicago is a little south of all that.

Ryan and Kevin are both correct. Bikes are not allowed on the sidewalk on that section of Sheridan. They aren't illegal on the street, but most people won't ride there when traffic is heavy. It doesn't exactly look like that was the case when you were there.

I just came down that stretch about twenty minutes ago.  It is just so poorly designed on Sheridan. You can't go on the sidewalks and the road is  normally too dangerous. Coming East on Devon there is a bike lane...then at the turn it suddenly disappears and you are on Sheridan. I know Ardmore is the road for going North between Bryn Mawr and Devon..what road are you supposed to use going South? Perhaps I missed a sign.

All this was the fault of those high rises that blocked the lakefront path from continuing up to Rodgers Park. Damn Daley senior!

Right..my bad..thanks for the correction on Kenmore (it was late).  Nice to know about Winthrop..thx.

Ardmore is the east west access & Kenmore has the northbound bike lane & Winthrop has the southbound. That part of Sheridan can and should always be avoided. Even in light traffic cars are moving fast to get to or from LSD. Check the map:  http://chicagocompletestreets.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Chicag...

Using either Kenmore (northbound) or Winthrop (southbound) as an alternative to Sheridan is a much safer option there.

I was coming from Thorndale/Hollywood beach and heading up to Rogers park beach travel through Loyola campus it seemed viable at the time. Kenmore is blocked at Rosemont so that leaves Salmoning up Winthrop or going all the way over to Broadway which is hardly a better alternative.

Eh well.

Winthrop is not a viable southbound alternative as it dead-ends at Foster. It picks up at the next block but you've got to go onto Sheridan or Broadway to get there.

Yeah I've ridden about every road that way in the past 6-7 years of being in Chicago, it just seemed strange on a holiday weekend without the usual traffic I got yelled at twice on the same stretch of road.

At Rosemont there's an alley between Kenmore and Sheridan that all the students take while Loyola rebuilds that last block of Kenmore.  Sheridan between Ardmore and Devon is never really safe since it's too narrow.  Sheridan north of Devon isn't really any better, though.  Getting to Evanston kind of sucks in general.

The alleys are scary and after all of Loyola's statements and concerns about student safety I see females walking the alleys, esp. the one next to the red line, headphones in, staring at a smart phone oblivious. Not too mention the alleys have so many hazards to bike tires I will walk it on the sidewalk first.
