So... My buddy and I ride the Norht Branch Trail up to Lake Ave. Take Lake Ave. going East as  our destination is the Bahai Temple. As we are heading East, someone in car yells out "You are going to get a ticket!". Not sure what he meant. As we proceed further East (going through Wilmette...), we come across a sign wth a bike and the universal "No" sign. What gives??? I can't imagine that bikes are not allowed on ANY street. Help me understand.

"Except for Lake Avenue and the Edens Expressway, bicycles are allowed on all Village streets."

Not sure about a good alternative for you since I've always taken Tower Road east to Sheridan when I wanted a different way home, but it's a bit out of the way to get to the Temple.

I guess I am wondering WHY bikes are not allowed on Lake St.????

Not sure.  Anyone out there have the backstory behind the decision?  It looks like it's been on a books since at least 1990 according to a Tribune article.

Some rude cyclists ruined it for everyone along retirement row.

It's been like that for a long time...

No big deal, there are some great side street alternatives for cyclists in that part of town.

I get off the North Branch at Glenview Road, which turns into Wilmette Avenue. I then cross the tracks make the first right than left onto Greenleaf Avenue. This route is much safer and quieter than Lake Avenue.

Thanks Tom. We are going to give that a try.

The Glenview Rd. route is much safer (and more pleasant, IMO). Lake Ave. (especially during commute hours) is very dangerous.

Lake street in Wilmette has been closed to bike traffic west of Green Bay for about 40 years. It's a bit narrow for a 4 lane street and only recently has the speed limit been lowered to 30 E of Skokie Blvd. If i had to guess, i'd say the average speed there is closer to 40. There are good routes parallel through town.

Speeding on Lake has been a problem for as long as I can remember.  From my experience, I'd agree with Mike's guess about average speeds there.

If you use Glenview/Wilmette to get across Green Bay/Metra tracks, there are a few nice options to continue east.  Forest (1 block north) is a much more pleasant alternative alternative to Lake. Greenleaf (3 blocks south, runs from Metra tracks to 3rd St. - by Bahai Temple) is another.

Glenview/Wilmette Rd/Linden are the streets I like to ride when I need to avoid Lake.  Beautiful houses up there, just pick a side street and enjoy the view!

Lots of beautiful houses and gardens on the side streets. The road less traveled may offer many beautiful surprises.
