Cyclist struck, killed by CTA Brown Line train on North Side

Sad, sad news.

A 31-year-old cyclist was struck and killed by a Brown Line train early Thursday on the North Side.

About 12:20 a.m., a man riding his bike was struck by a northbound train as he attempted to go around the gates near the CTA Kimball station in the 4700 block of Kedzie Avenue, police said.

The man was identified as Ronayne Thomas, of the 1900 block of North Drake Avenue and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Some Brown Line trains heading northbound were suspended for more than an hour, the CTA said.

UPDATE: DNA Info has a somewhat more thorough piece.

Very sad, indeed.

horrible. Read about the delay on twitter yesterday.

It never ceases to amaze me how many cars/pedestrians/bikes go around the gates on Kedzie/Kimball.

I agree.

I have a very irrational fear of getting hit by a train. But apparently some people don't have enough rational fear of that.

Regardless.. this is sad. :(

A DNA Info reporter is looking to talk to anyone who Ronayne for a story she is writing.  Her name is Mina Bloom and she can be contacted at 847-370-9735 (preferred) or email mina.bloom24 at gmail.com

Report in his home area newspaper, The Dunn County News.

Always sad to hear of this twisted mess in my old neighborhood again. The CTA should put another gate on the opposite side to match the other one for the traffic side.

Even more messed up ... I just saw this on facebook about the ghost bike getting stolen. Hopefully they can recover the bike. Seriously you have to pretty low-life to steal a ghost bike.
