"There are probably a million dedicated cyclists in this country, bent on taking over a quarter or a third of the nation’s road space, built at the price of, let us repeat, trillions"

Fred Barnes, the executive editor, is hardly known for satire. This articles' auther, Caldwell, is hardly a writer known for comedy either. This is not 'just a hate piece...calling us jerks..." this is s deeply held and serious view of "cyclists", or "liberals" or "latte town" denizens. We live in a nice, Blue bubble. Much of our nation does not.

To steal a metaphor from another viral source, the snowflake will not take blame for the avalanche.

Aww...Anne.  Why did you have to "pile on" with another negative, hate piece about us cyclists?  Don't we have enough active CL threads about publications calling us jerks?

According to the Weekly Standard's website, they feature "Satirical wit, sophisticated perspective, conservative intelligence."   If that article contains a single bit of wit, sophistication or intelligence...I'll cancel my daily NYTimes and subscribe.

but yes, you're right, we don't need another thread of alternative views of us lycra louts. :)

Borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrinng!  Never in my life had I wished that John Kass from the Trib would have written a piece instead.  At least his articles are fun to read, albeit totally insulting.

I've always wondered why conservatives don't absolutely love transportation bicycling, since it embodies so many of the values they espouse: thrift, discipline, self-sufficiency, and a mild contempt for any effort to regulate them.

Nice!

Some conservatives do - I'll try to dig up the one or two pieces along these lines that I remember reading earlier this year.

I often feel like those are the qualities many conservatives SAY they value... but their real values are something else entirely (mainly screw the little guy, and definitely screw the woman, child, and immigrant.)

Rather lacking. How shocking! ;)

What exactly is being "Internet-friendly"?  Doesn't it help to have easily understandable terms when trying to make a point?

Jeff Schneider said:

Is this for real?  It reads like something from The Onion (Remember the story about the president personally funding a Muslim museum, quoted as fact by Fox News?).

"City officials want to be “bicycle-friendly” for the same reason they want to be “gay-friendly” or “Internet-friendly,” and for the same reason they built opera houses in the nineteenth century and art museums in the twentieth—it is a way of telling investors: “Rich people live here."

"Bicycling’s apostles have behind them not just the economic and lobbying power of the “One Percent,” but also the cultural and intellectual power of its most sophisticated members."

Clearly the vast wealth of the bicycling elite can no longer be hidden.  Our plan to remake American cities into places of diversity, wealth and education has been revealed!  We've been outed!

Internet friendly is... not having a closed mind to advancing technology? Not standing on your front porch grouching at everyone to stop using the "intercom" so damn much? IDK.
