Hi there,
Thinking of making a longer tour? I am, and I plan on riding to MA to visit some family and then take a train back. The trip is about 950 miles and I plan on following suggested bike routes. I have a trailer that I plan on using/sharing.
I want to stay at campgrounds as much as possible. I would like to do 80-90 miles a day or five to six hours at about 18 mph. I am in reasonable shape and have been riding all winter long in Chicago. I have been an amature racer (cat 4) and a messenger in NYC and Chicago. The trip should take 10 or 12 days.
Doable?

Educate yourself - - it's much different than a race to do this. Too often nobody is there to catch you when you fall - -

I rode from Chicago to Boston via Ontario as part of a cross-country trip,
mostly camping. It took me about two weeks. Details at:

When are you planning on leaving? I'm looking at doing a tour this summer and would love to join if the timing is right. Personally I think the trip is doable in 2 weeks, especially if you take a rest day or two which I think is necessary at least once a week. I've done some touring before and have a touring bike w/ trailer and camp gear and time, just need a destination and preferably some company. Let me know what you think

know when you're going? I'm moving back to boston in late summer/early fall and was thinking about shipping my stuff and biking there.
My plans in MA fell through, but let me know about your plan to Boston.

Still planning on making the trip. Maybe in a week.
Okay, I am trying to improvise the plan. I guess I should basically just enjoy the ride with the destination being secondary. However, I feel like I have to have a theme to the ride. i.e. Bars Across America.

Possible themes -

  • Cities of Industry (my artwork involves intricate metalwork.) Seek out material for my artwork - (ask me for more info.)
  • Wind farms or green energy - why not end up in Cape Cod to support the windfarm. Could even do some paid journalism and learn about this as a possible career path. Maybe get GreenPeace to sponsor. They are working on the project.
  • Commune sites - Hippies only

Good plan. 80-90 miles a day is really agressive for a long tour. You'll want to take some more time to enjoy it. You might want to do one day like that: like getting the hell out of Chicago :-) But make sure you have time to settle in to the campsites, take it slow on rainy days, etc., and even have some time for that side trip to something that's really interesting.
