Bike cop is the best job in this city
I thought those bike cops were just for show. I mean, how can a cop even chase a perp without a car?
I would not want to ride a bike with a bullet proof vest on.
I seriously don't think it would be any where near as enjoyable as a normal bike ride.
During the Ride of Silence, we had a few bike cop escorts. One of them was doing most of the corking of intersections; he would wait for the group to pass, then haul ass past the entire group to the next intersection – sometimes even jumping up onto the median. Those guys have to be in pretty good shape, I'd imagine, especially since they are riding with a heavy battery pack and bullet-proof vest.
- Bike cops have replaced cops on horses as the preferred method for crowd control during protests. Cheaper than horses, they can move quicker than most protesters and use their bikes for mobile barricades. Look at footage of the Nato summit from last year for some good examples.
- Also, a story in the Trib last year pointed out that bike cops are much better than squad cars in chasing perps on foot, especially in the down town area.
So no, they are not just for show.

I was joking.

I was on Dearborn last week and had to maneuver around a delivery truck parked in the PBL. After I was a couple blocks south of the truck, I flagged down a bike cop that was headed in the other direction and asked if she could do something about the truck. Her response, "oh yeah."
Yay for bike cops.
That guy's name is Greg. He was pulling some badass air off the curbs. Before the ride, he told me about spending time at The Autonomous Zone in Wicker Park watching the beginnings of Critical Mass.

They get good training on bike handling skills, and they definitely have to be in good shape. In the neighborhoods, they can get into lots of places where a squad car can't go and can be much more effective at catching a suspect on who's on foot.

Does this mean they are actively giving out tickets to those parking in the bike lane?
