I have been parking in this spot since 2009, but never came out to see this:

I'm pretty sure the culprit is one of the large umbrellas used by the coffee shop at the corner, based on the scrapes with gray paint near my bike and big rubber mark on the umbrella.  Plus the fact two employees said it hit my bike while the manager swears it didn't.

Assuming the frame's not damaged that's at least a new wheel, fork, crank, rings and chain.  I know I'm lucky that this didn't happen in a crash and it's only money, but the adrenaline and anger is still running through me.

Ouch!  Sorry man, hope the frame is not damaged.

Would a little honesty from the shopkeep hurt at all?  Seriously, it's not a big leap to piece together what happened.  Let us know what shop and that's one place I'll never get coffee from.

Starbucks umbrella? If the manager is being a jerk, I'd contact corporate directly. They're usually really good with addressing issues. I'd send the pics over their way too.

Call the police! They damaged your property!

wow that sucks. was that a result of the high winds / storms ?

I agree with Julia - escalate it and send documentation. maybe witnesses too ?

Yup, call the police, file a report. Do you have renter's insurance? Your bike will probably be covered (and the insurance company will be more successful than you in dealing with the coffee shop?).

It's always a windy corner and today was pretty severe.  I'm calling the number on the 'incident report form' to make sure it's been sent in and see if they'll be a little more responsible.

I've got to walk up to one of the DePaul buildings soon. If you want another person to scope out the damage and back up your case, I'm just down the street.

Feel free, but while I value your opinion I worry it can't affect things from here.

Was it a Charbucks? if so, yet another reason for me to hate them other than their crappy coffee, patrons who put about an oz of sugar in their coffee, and patrons who fling their car doors blindly open to get their morning fix.

That really sucks though sorry about your bike.

Renters insurance could definitely be an option, and a police report is ALWAYS a good idea in a situation involving property damage and insurance companies.  If you don't have insurance that will cover this, I'd do what one of the earlier posters suggested and call the corporate office of whatever restaurant this is-- might be able to get a quick fix that way.

Wheel, fender, crank AND chain?  That is a 1 in a million shot that an umbrella did that damage in one swoop.  Sorry to see it, I hope you get some compensation.

dang, sorry to see that.
