A woman was killed yesterday as well in a right hook:

Sobering, indeed.

I read that same story yesterday.  There is no indication of the right hook.  Is there another source for that? Just wondering.

Yikes.  I know that area well.  Its right near the Cemeteries and is a pretty "calm" part of Irving Park Road.   Mind you, I try to stay off of IPR, but if I were to ride on it, that's an area that I might do so.    Wonder if Cell Phones were involved.

The Google maps street view is chilling There is a traffic signal for the bike trail but I see no signal for the exit ramp for the motorized vehicles. What is the rhyme or reason for when the bike signal is red or green?  I see no change in the signal because there is no signal at all for drivers when the bikes have a green.  Is this correct?  If that is the case the bike comes out of obscurity from bushes to see any traffic just as it hits the intersection and its the same for the cars and trucks. They turn and cannot see a bike until they are already in the turn.  Nobody has a chance.  Equally chilling is that the Google streetview has a truck turning and crossing the path.

Since the car was turning from the exit ramp I doubt that was a right hook. Looking at the intersection, I'd guess the cyclist was in cross walk for the Busse Woods Bicycle trail. It's a terrible intersection design where if the exit had a green light, the cyclist would have had a walk signal, and the driver approaching an arcing turn with a green light would have never slowed down.

Kill someone as a result of negligence and you get a ticket and a fine.

If I accidentally killed someone in almost any other way while being outside of a car, the repercussions would be far more serious. Everytime this happens it blows my mind and boils my blood. This isn't even a bikes/peds vs. cars thing, it's a humanity thing.

FTA:  The driver of the Malibu was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, police said.

This made me sad.

Back-to-back fatalities...so sad, tragic and unnecessary.

FYI, our suburban staff is meeting with Elk Grove Village tomorrow to discuss a bike plan. They tell me the mayor has expressed interest in making it safer for people on bikes to access Busse Woods.

We will blog about any results, hopefully there are solutions that can be implemented quickly.

Thanks,

It's posted as a right hook on Streetsblog Chicago - they have it under the "Today's Headlines" section. Based on the tribune news report, it sounded like one.

Thanks, Ethan.

I've heard from several folks in Elk Grove that a bike plan is underway and nearly everyone agrees that this particular location is dangerous.

Any further details on the 83-year-old man that was killed?
