There seem to be a lot of discussions about gear, clothing, winter riding that don't take into account the sort of commutes people have; i.e. advice that applies to someone who rides 15 miles each way may not be useful to someone who rides 3 miles. So I thought I'd propose that people add the (one-way) distance of their daily commute, or their most typical one-way distance for regular 'utility' (rather than social/fitness/recreational) rides after their user name and see if it helps, or at least provides a little added interest...

Directly to work it is 4.5 miles
LOL-I thought that the "1.0" after your name was a new internet version of h'! So I added the miles to work for me to my name. I always try to read instructions before responding.
ok i get it, derrrr.
My typical winter utility rides are 2-10 miles round trip with multiple stops (grocery store, library, post office, drug store, hardware store, etc.). Recreational rides could be anywhere from 5-20 miles.
My commute is 6-7 miles one-way, depending on the route. Surface streets are more direct but it's a bit slower due to traffic signals. Total time is usually about 20-25 minutes - more than enough time to get the body & mind warmed up in the morning.
Whats the rule if your commute changes daily? I want in on the fun but mine can be between 0-6.
done
you could add 0-6 after your name

Great idea Cameron! It also puts something between the distance and the ___ hours/minutes/seconds ago number. My participation implies that I like H's original idea of course. Thanks h!

I'd suggest adding units to the number, so that in a few days when this thread drops off the front page the numbers have a little more meaning to people who didn't see this.
We should also include where we ride, as well, since the conditions may be more start-stop and the weather/wind will vary as well. Maybe allow those awful signatures that make other forums an exercise in misery to read.
The 4.0 mi version was too buggy.
