The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

Hello. I’m genuinely curious and not flaming. Does calling 311 do anything? If one submits photos, are the drivers later ticketed? Thanks!

I don't think bike lanes are a panacea for everything to encourage bike riding but I do accept them as a lot of help.

Think of a shady tree on a hot summer day.  Riding in a 100° day, it's not an air-conditioned tavern but it's still a good place to stop and rest.  You still need to stay hydrated, you still need to dress appropriately.  But the shade helps.

There might be some drawbacks to a shady tree.  Bees nest? Mosquitos?

Hello aLex. Although many things in life seem frustrating and fruitless the process for worthwhile change is indeed a difficult journey. But eventually I am confident that in the near future we will prevail in achieving positive results for our community in this matter.

I encourage you to become involved with Bike Lane Uprising. We will succeed for the good of our cycling community together. Thank you.

311 isn't nearly as responsive as they need to be, but we need people like Argonne to keep fighting the good fight. If no one called 311 or voiced any complaints then the lack of enforcement issue would be that much harder to overcome.

I doubt anything is being done with the 311 data. When the city added the code to the 311 system to report vehicles in the bike lanes, they mentioned that they were going to use the data to identify hotspots. Well, I've identified several hotspots, and I've yet to see a single Finance Dept. ticket person in any of them.

I also submit the reports to Bike Lane Uprising, and the group has made some progress.

Unfortunately there is no provision in the law to ticket drivers after the fact. I'd love to see that change. I've personally documented close to 1500 violations in the past 2 years. At $300/$150 each, that's some decent $$$ for the city.

P.S. F*ck off, clp.
