The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

I reported it online. It was last week Wednesday.

Good.

For everybody to know:

You can report cab violations directly to the Business Affairs department. https://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/bacp/provdrs/consumer/s...

The problem with reporting cab violations is that you'll have to attend a hearing if you want the cabbie to actually face any consequences.

Probably TWO hearings!  I did file a complaint once.

At the first hearing, his lawyer showed up to ask for a continuance, which was granted.  I agreed to show up for the 2nd hearing.  The cab driver did show up and was suspended for 30 days.

If I didn't show up the charges would have been dropped.  If I didn't show up for the 2nd hearing the charges would have been dropped.

Yeah, the same thing happened with me. A continuance was granted at the first hearing so the driver could lawyer up, and was fined and required to attend an 8 hour class at the 2nd hearing. No doubt the charges would have been dropped had I not attended both hearings, as I was the only witness.

225 N Franklin St. 311 report submitted. Yup, still illegal.

I think what irks me more than the fact that the city refused to enforce the law in this one block stretch of Franklin is that the design is simply p*ss poor. This is the only block on the entire Franklin St bike lane from Van Buren to Hubbard that is routed along the curb. For the other mile or so the bike lane is away from the curb, allowing vehicles to pull to the curb to discharge or pick up passengers. Of course, that still doesn't stop them from camping in the bike lane, but at least they have the option to stop legally. There appears to be space here to have a full bike lane away from the curb, while still allowing traffic lanes. Until that day comes, I'm going to continue to report violations, and ask the city why they aren't writing tickets. This particular taxi was parked at the curb for several minutes. I could see the vehicle as far south as Washington St.

Where are the bike lane markings?

199 S Franklin St. 311 report submitted.

71 S Franklin St. 311 report submitted.

220 S Wells St. 311 report submitted.

Is there any evidence that the calls, emails, & photos are having any effect at all? Have the numbers of blocking vehicles gone down? Is the City writing more tickets?

Nope.

And they aren't going to because there are approximately 1,300,147 things more important than this to worry about.
