There are just a few spots left on the very special Bike the Drive volunteer team called "Volunteer Accommodations" or the "Trailer Troop."
The MB Financial Bank Bike the Drive is on Sunday, May 30, 2010.
It's fun to Bike the Drive for free - handing out refreshments to volunteers who are course marshals and can't get to the rest stops. You do have to get there early - 4:30AM - but with your trailer, you load up with fruit, muffins, water, a first aid kit and accident reports and head out to demonstrate that trailers are a superior method of carrying large loads. You'll find you're still passing lots of slower rides.
If you're interested in this volunteer job, please write to me directly at kangarookathy@yahoo.com or phone 773 248 5499

I'm moving again on the 16th, but due to the weather and questionable conditions, I hired movers...I might be moving a bedroom set via the trailer if anyone wants to participate in that. Hopefully we can get some more moving action going on soon!

Rev., I recently joined the bike frame builders group here on the chainlink and I imagine it's a good place to discuss trailer building too.
If you haven't done much welding, plan to learn/practice on small pieces of scrap metal before starting on the real project.

i think i might invest in one of those two person couch things. not sure what the name of one of those is. i know bike-tais use them. but ive seen one for sale. id love to be able to take some non-riding friends for small rides.

Hey Todd Ive met you before. [i think everyone has] your trailer is great.
my reason for wanting to build my own is so that i can build it is so that i can learn to weld. which ive always wanted to do. my dad builds trailers for cars and sells those on the side. so id like him to teach me. 'bonding time' would be another. but dont tell him that ^_^
id like one to be able to carry large loads, a custom one so that i can take my lab on some rides. tough id have to train her. ive seen a guy with a small chariot-esq trailer that his dog could jump off and on. it was very nifty.

We've got lots of homebuilt trailers here in Chicago. My own experience with homebuilding is that unless you put a very low value on your time, you don't want to do it to 'save' money. But if you enjoy the process or have a desire for something unique or unavailable commercially then homebuilding is great.

has anyone here custom built their own trailer?

Joe, there are lots of options. I mostly just use large panniers for groceries. I have a converted Burley trailer w/a flat-bed option, an enclosed box option, and I also have used the stripped frame w/my Yakima attachments to haul a bike.
