I have been debating getting a GoPro Hero, but have not done so because of the hefty $400 price tag for the black level (I'd want the WiFi remote, and the ability to take photos and video simultaneously). Does anyone have experience with it? I hear the battery life is terrible.

I bought one of the Veho cameras, without the waterproof case and have tested it.  I paid $10 from the manufacturer in China.  Added a microSD card and worked with a little bit of experimentation.  It is not rated as waterproof.  So the version on dailysteals with the case might address that issue.  HOWEVER.  The video quality for a $10 product is not bad, unless you want to read the license plate of a car.  The resolution is low.  I cannot usually read the license plate information and it seems to be very choppy.  It is rated at 30fps, but it seems lower.   If you want to use the Veho for documentation of your commute, it is questionable.  The controls are very poor, the documentation is worse.   I would not spend more than $20 on this.  I would wait for the MonoPrice camera and see the reviews.    The action/sports video cam market is changing quickly and there will be affordable ($100 or less), high quality products for cycling very soon.

Mountain Bike Review, who already does the best bike light comparison reviews, IMHO, just put up this "shoot out" back-to-back comparison of six current helmet cams.  The review is dated March 13, so should be as current as anything out there.  I found it useful.  And their test rig is hilarious:
