PSA The City Water project has resulted in construction and closing of large portions of Southport. Even once the project has passed the spot, the pavement has been destroyed. Its a major bikelane in that part of the City and this has rendered it virtually unusable. The project is moving to other side of the street in a couple of weeks.

Yup, I was on Southport last night between Grace and the point where it dumps into Clark around 4200 n. Light traffic at the time made it passable. I only saw road destruction from about Grace up to Irving Park. I don't know what is south of there. Its getting crossed off my internal map for a while. Shame, I always liked that stretch of road.
What Dave Barish described runs from about 3800N to 4200N. You say "large portions." Does the project continue south of 3800N? If so, could you specify a street or approx. address at the southern end of the project?
I don't know the Southern End of the project. They guy with Kenny Construction indicated that the Water Main was going South from Irving park (4200) for some distance. The City Ward website suggests that it is going to run the whole length of Southport. It states
New water main being installed; supposed to start in late February 2013 and be completed by early June 2013 including restoration.

They have just reached Grace. I'll look for markings on the street past Grace. I don't ride down there, this is based on walking my kids to school.
I think they did the part south of Wellington last year. I remember riding it (or trying to ride it) and the street being an absolute mess. I have not been on it in a while so do not know whether they restored the pavement or not.
I just did a quick search and found this article, indicating that the water main work won't go beyond Diversey (2800N).
FYI - The whole length of Southport is from Finkl Steel (just north of Cortland, 1900N) to Clark (4200N). Maybe it's just the portion of Southport that's in the ward.
Wasn't Southport ripped on last year through Roscoe Village/East Lakeview (around Diversey, Belmont, Fullerton)?

Thanks for sharing. I'm pretty sure the section south of Wellington was resurfaced last year after that work was completed. The Lakeview Patch article says this section will also be resurfaced after the work is completed, so hopefully this won't leave the bike lanes a mess. I live in the neighborhood and will try to keep an eye on it and check in with CDOT about resurfacing after Water Management is done.

Hopefully it will be fixed properly - a lot sooner than Wells.
