For some reason I was sure someone would have posted the news here already.

October 3rd, 2014 will be a sad day in Chicago History!

A sad day, indeed.  Here's the scoop, for those who haven't already gotten it.

Anyone planning to go there soon? I'd like to try the duck fat fries.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll definitely have to swing by this week, since I'm on vacation from work.

Awwww Vondo I'm so Jealous!!!

Just moved to Avondale last week so got to try Hot Doug's for the first time last Friday! I'm still glad to be just a couple blocks from Smalls though.

Hot Doug's used to be a stop on my Hot Dog Ride for EBC. However, the lines got so long that we stopped going there.  We went there in 2006 shortly after Doug became an outlaw. I don't think he was too worried. Two of Chicago's finest had ridden their bikes to Hot Doug's the same day we did. I don't think they had the fois gras dog. They are pictured here with one of our club members.

The food is great but I simply do not have the patience for the line. I have not been there in years. I had been thinking that its time to go back. However, with this news and the nostalgic last taste crowds building I will likely look elsewhere for encased meats.

I've been eating at Hot Doug's almost every week for a couple of years. I won't stand in a line there that's more than 5 people out the door. (Which is about 15 minutes). Today's line was consistent with what you'd expect given the announcement. Needless to say, I didn't get any encased meat today.

If you go on a weekday is a 15-minute wait typical or atypical? I want to go but fear a Saturday visit would require waiting an unreasonable amount of time. True?

The one time I went I went during the week and seemed to wait an hour.  Maybe a day of really bad weather makes the line more reasonable, or else get there right before they open.

Monday - Thursday are better than Friday & Saturday. Closer to 11 is better than 12.

In the last 6-9 months, there have probably been 2-3 times where I've waited more than 5 minutes. Today's line at 11:15am, though, looked like about a 25 minute line.

Agreed. The other place I wanted to try but never did was Great Lake Pizza, claimed to be the best in America. Maybe we should start up a franchise concept. Let's call it Hot Doug's Great Lake Pizza and Microbrewery. Duck fat french fries every day. Mmmmmmm.
