Feel-good article in the Trib about an off-duty officer who saved the day---but then what?

Off-duty Chicago cop helps cyclist after crash

"The 21-year-old man had been riding his bicycle to work when he crashed into a car door that opened in his path, completely folding the door against the front of the car."

Dang those robotic cars with their self-opening doors.

"At some point during the wreck, an edge of the car door apparently clipped the cyclist's neck, causing him to bleed profusely."

At least it was described as a "wreck," but the a-word does appear further down.

So he was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK, which is good, but I'd really like to know whether the driver was, you know, charged with breaking the law or something?

I'm sure any charges are currently pending in this crash/dooring/incident.

I heard this story on WLS this morning.  The cyclist "collided with an open car door".

There was a thread of this on the OPCC e-mail list. Being a past dooring victim myself, (a few cracked ribs), I questioned the door being folded against the front fender by a cyclist. The Sun-Times ran the same article almost word for word, without the door folding statement.

Wait why shouldn't this be called an accident? I doubt the driver intended to door the cyclist.

But yeah the driver should've been ticketed and I bet they weren't.
