Foster is pretty bad. A few options - Damen North to Berwyn or you can take Lawrence West to the North Channel Trail.
If you want to see more options, I'd try to Google map it with the bicycle option. I don't agree with one of the suggestions to take Lincoln Ave though. With no bike lane, that's a bad route.
On the return trip to home, you can take California to Winnemac.
How about California to Ainslie?
Ainslie is one way eastbound, meets Lincoln Ave at Western and has a light, then is one way eastbound again. It doesn't go through all the way to Ravenswood, so you would have to salmon or take Winchester to Winnemac to Ravenswood.
Winnemac is one way eastbound all the way to Wolcott with lights at the major intersections. Scenic ride through Winnemac Park is a bonus. Wolcott, south to Lawrence and there you are. FYI, there's construction at Winnemac and Wolcott and for 1 block on Wolcott, but you can get through on the sidewalk or take the alleys.
Ainslie is not bad either on the one-way sections. I find it tight in the two-way section (east of Western) with parking on both sides.
I believe Lawrence has marked bike lane the whole way from California to Ravenswood.
The one-ways make it pretty challenging. The most straight-forward route is California to Winnemac on the return. It's nice because you can cut through the park, just be careful when exiting onto Damen. I noticed drivers aren't paying that much attention to park traffic.
Heading east, I'd take California to Lawrence and then Lawrence. Its gotten much better, especially east of Western.
But if you don't like Lawrence, take California to Lawrence, turn right and then make a quick left on Virginia. Take that a block or so to Leland and take that all the way to Ravenswood and back up a block to Lawrence.
