The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

Today, heading east on the brand new ONE WAY bike lane on Washington, between the river and state:
1 car (actually just in the left turn lane, so it was OK.)
2 separate pedestrians walking in the lane, not the sidewalk,
3 cyclists going the wrong way.

The last cyclist was a fully kitted out commuter and going fast. Rly?

How can we get respect for bike lanes if we don't have respect ourselves?

:-) Was it a really ugly kit? Hehehe. Sorry, that last part made me picture a cyclist looking really goofy all decked out for a race but commuting. Kits are super comfy but yeah, I was warned early on to avoid looking too much like a "cyclist" when on a bike commute.

I see my fair share of uber drivers and impatient cars in the bike lane, but does this count? I noticed a bottleneck of squirming cyclist when I came up to this intersection the other day and saw the greatest lockup job ever. The whole front wheel was left sticking out into the bike lane, it was there for a couple days...

I noticed this as well the other day. Also, it appears the only thing preventing someone from taking it is a quick release front wheel so it probably got stolen....

Today on Reddit

That's a doozy. Here's the story behind the sign. It's in Sydney Australia. Thanks for sharing the pic!

My favorite sighting of the year (so far)

Ah, fun on Elston this morning. Among the many bike lane occupiers, I got pics of these two on the east and west side, respectively, around Homer:

This sounds like a good idea!!!

In February I spoke about the problem of vehicles parking in bicycle
lanes. The sheriff had told me that he could not have his deputies
ticket motorists "stopped" in the bicycle lane who were waiting to turn
right (for as long as 30 minutes because there was no open driveway to
turn right into) because they were not "parked" they were just
"stopped." Actually he could have ticketed them but the sheriff's
deputies are not very familiar with the nuances of the vehicle code.

I suggested that the "No Parking" signs be changed to "No Stopping"
signs, so the deputies could ticket drivers stopped in the bike lanes.
Apparently the Public Works Director and the city attorney decided that
this was a good idea and they have started to change the signs,
beginning with the known problem areas.

Neither rain nor snow nor pesky bicycles...

I see this too many times... There is a perfectly good parking spot along the curb, yet the vehicle is parked in the lane of traffic!

Looks like a job for Lincoln Park Towing!
