There are definitely a lot of good entry level road bikes amongst the various brands. I am a big fan of my Felt (my bike is not entry-level but it is women-specific). I've also heard Jamis is a good brand. Liv (Giant) may also be a good option. 

Northside shops - I loved the experience I had buying a bike from Turin (I bought a Focus Cx bike last fall) and I also like Johnny Sprockets. I don't know if Focus makes entry level road bikes but their bikes handle really well. I would love to get a Focus road bike after riding my Focus Cx bike.
