Each year, the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) installs up to 500 new bike racks throughout the city of Chicago. Bike racks provide cyclists security, encourage bike transit and help beautify neighborhoods.

Help us determine where bike parking is needed most.

Spread the word about our new website where you and your constituents can submit a bike rack location request: http://BikeParking.ChicagoCompleteStreets.org

Thank you for your support in making Chicago an even more bike-friendly city!

I've requested a couple bike racks around my neighborhood; however, the suggestions have been rejected. The reason given for the rejection is that the area is "residential." When asked for clarification, none was provided. Does anyone have more insight on this?

It is an area with many high rise apartments. Typically, residents can park their bikes in the storage area of the buildings, though there are many bikes still locked up outside to any and every sign pole or fence. Where are visitors supposed to lock up? Their are at least two sucker poles on my street too which are not safe for locking.

I think a residential area of such high density should warrant consideration from CDOT for bike racks.

Try an email to Kathleen Murphy. She can be reached at kmurphy@samschwartz.com

She's been handling the bike parking assignments.

Often they want to be sure that a good many of the people living in, or using the building want the bike racks installed.  Sometimes residents are opposed to new bike racks, fearing that this will only attract bicyclist.

Bob,

Thanks for the great response. I'll get in touch with Kathleen and let her know my ideas.

I was successful in getting 2 separate bike racks installed via this site so it does work. Another I requested was rejected due to lack of sidewalk space.
