Who is up for a ride to the Brookfield Zoo? Approx 15 miles each way. Route to be decided, tho Ogden seems most direct (suggestions welcome) Come back through Oak Park, maybe stop at Garfield Conservatory. How does Sunday the 21st sound?

That sound slike fun. How much time would we have at the zoo?

The 21st is Fathers Day in case that makes a difference for some people who might want to go. It works for me.
Ride is posted as an event. i think 11am would be a good departure time (especially if some of us do midnight marauders). Take as much time as we want. And maybe this would be a fun way to bring Pops along for Fathers Day.
i'm not seeing an event post for marauders. anyone know what is up with that this weekend?

I do NOT recommend Ogden, especially with a group. Heading west past Little Village or so, where the boulevard/service lanes disappear, it's a terrible route: aggressive drivers, narrow lanes, and the road is ripped to shreds with potholes. In addition, it curves around quite a bit, so a driver can come speeding around a curve without knowing you're ahead.

Better to take Division or Augusta west, Oak Park Ave. south, Riverside Drive west (becomes Washington at some point) through Berwyn and Riverside, and then once you pass 1st Ave the zoo isn't far from the high school.
Good to know about Ogden farther south. Much appreciated. Taking Augusta through Oak Park should be a nice ride. Is 1st ave a smooth ride?

You should check out the salt creek trail while you are out there. The entrance to the trail is a bit hard to find here is a map on where to start. you loose the trail in the woods, it is very windy and fun. http://tinyurl.com/nhfxn4

I was out there yesterday and had a heck of a time finding a route there and back from Oak park that didn't have the road tore up for construction. The zoo is surrounded by an expressway and a few cemeteries to the north and riverside subdivision to the west so getting there is a challenge.

From the City to the west side, I take Washington, it works well. Oak park Ave is a good one to go south. 26th is tore up w of oak park ave. So is Desplains near 290.
If you take the route I suggested, you won't travel on 1st ave., you'll just cross it. I have never ridden on 1st Ave. and do not plan to ever do so--it's kind of a major highway.

Staying on the side streets in the suburbs isn't nearly the pain in the ass that it can be in the city. There won't be stop signs at every block, so you'll be able to keep up a decent pace. I ride out to La Grange on the route I described pretty frequently, and on a good day I can make it in 45 minutes.

What's your start point? I can put a route together for you. I've ridden this way several times on my way to my brother's in Elmhurst, avoiding busy streets (unfortunately the final approach to the zoo is unavoidably nasty but mercifully short). Most of the suggestions here are good ones- will incorporate them.
We gonna have enough for a group discount ?
