hey everyone. im looking to get a road bike for exercise and commuting purposes. i have tried craigslist but it seems like 90% of the bikes listed on there are complete rip-offs. my old mountain-hybrid convert was not doing the trick for me, weighing in at around 6,000lbs. i'd like to spend around $200 for a solid, well-kept, maintained, road bike made AFTER 1985. im tired of looking at 1973 schwinn world tourist mixte's for absurd prices.

since most shops are clean of used bikes at this point in the season, im hoping the great people of TCL can help me out. if anyone has any suggestions, has a bike for sale, or knows of a good place to get one, please let me know. ill be checking this discussion and can also be emailed at GarrettTV@gmail.com.

Thanks everyone

Play it again sports 3939 n. Ashland...south of Irving Park, Used bikes and one of the best mechanics out there.
I'm going through almost the exact same situation. Nearly New Shop 3826 N Broadway, between Grace and Sheriden is great. They have a steady steam of used bikes coming in, it's all they deal with. The most expensive bike I've seen there is $250. They tend to have a lot of Schwinn's also, but there is usally a few other brands around. I keep poking head in to see what they have (I'm being pretty picky), and there's been a few Raleighs, and Fujis, except they've been a little tall for me (I'm looking for a 56-58 cm). So, you might find something perfect for you. The guys that work there are cool and won't rip you off.
thanks a lot everyone. ill definitely check out the suggestions. looks like i have something to fill up my saturday morning with...

PJ, i have been pretty picky, too. I've just been getting this bad feeling lately when looking on craigslist, seeing almost the same exact bike listed for $100 on one post, and then $300 on another. almost had a fuji nabbed the other day, but someone beat me to it...good luck to you in your search.
If worst comes to worst I'm sure someone on here can weld two bmx frames together to make you a psuedo tall bike.
There's a guy on here Kevin T. he's on my friends if you want to contact him he should have something for you. The guy works out of his garage by belmont and california and has a huge selection for very reasonable prices.
I know what you mean. The $300 Schwinn Varsity bikes always make me chuckle. Good luck to you too.

Alex - Thanks!

Alex, GREAT CALL! I went to an open sale this guy was having at his house one time, but I lost his card/phone number and haven't been able to get a hold of him. I'm definitely going to check out his selection since it's been two months or so since I was by... Thanks!

I have an old 61 cm blue Miyata with downtube shifters, a nearly new back tire and in pretty good condition. Lugged Cro-moly frame with a small dent in toptube. It's too big for me and I want to get rid of it. $100? I can send you some pics if you're interested.

hey everyone, thanks a lot for the help. I just lucked out and found a great deal (i think?) on a bike. Snagged an '86 Trek 310 Elance, all original and in very good shape, for $125. Now to figure out how to beef it up a bit... :-)

thanks again, all.
