The Chainlink

Does anyone know what these blazes are about? They mark the way north and south at least from Hyde Park down through the lakeshore extension. My wife swears she also saw them way over in NWI and MI a couple weeks back when we were riding there. The line points toward the route and they're always orange. When there's an available bike path, they point toward it and are marked "BP."

These markings are often used for invitational rides or commonly used routes and are referred to as Dan Henrys.

Wow, I have been cycling for decades and have never run across that term. You learn something new every day!

The next time I ride east into MI, I'll check to see how far this particular set extends.

Could be from Tour de Shore if they go all the way to MI.

Not Tour de Shore. Tour de Shore is yellow.

Could be from the tri-state tour a couple of weeks back but that didnt head to MI only to Wisconsin i believe they were orange.

You are correct.

It's route marking for Bicycle Illinois TriState Tour. http://www.bicycleillinois.com/tristatetour/tristatetour.htm

When I'm out riding and see those Dan Henrys I'm reminded of the Bicycle Illinois ride I did years ago. 500 miles in 6 days; a really great ride.

Being relatively new to organized rides, I did not know they were called "Dan Henrys" either!  The always useful and authoritative Wikipedia explains the origin.
