The Chainlink

To the rider who got hit yesterday (7/8) at Winnemac & Clark

Hi,

This is Renee. When I heard the hit & saw you fly I called 911 for you and gave you my contact info since you decided not to have the police respond at the scene when I passed my phone to you.

Your wheel and body were pretty messed up. It might not have seemed like it then but I know from experience it will be a whole lot worse in a few days.

I know you were saying you were OK but that is what we all have to tell ourselves after getting hit and it is very unfortunate and it sucks that the driver gets to hear this as well.

I should have made you sit down and wait it out for the police to arrive. I'm sorry for not doing this but when you say you don't want to, who am I to disagree or force?

I really hope you are not seriously fucked up and that driver pays you in full for your bike, doctors appointments, & everything it takes to heal + extra (please, please ask her pay for everything).

So sorry you got hit, I ride past that intersection multiple times a day and will be thinking about this hit and you for a long time.

Hope you feel better soon! And really, if you do decide to file a report I can be a witness for whatever they need.

I hope that the injured cyclist got medical attention and filed a police report. If you didn't file a report at the scene, you can still do it. It a really good idea to get that important piece of documentation in case you have significant medical bills and need to make an insurance claim against the driver. The Active Trans crash support hotline is there if you need additional help/resources.

I ride through that intersection multiple times daily. Thank you Renee for your concern for your fellow cyclist.

I hope the cyclist is okay.  Around what time did this happen?  I'm a block east of that intersection and bike/walk through there multiple times a day.

It was around 5-5:30pm. Not sure exactly. I live a block away as well, except west.

Thank you, Renee. I hope the cyclist sees this.

I'm a volunteer with the Crash Support Hotline and, even with that training, after I was hit I was unsure about calling the police right away. It's always a relief to hear about people looking out for each other.

Great job looking out for the cyclist - hope they do see this!

when I did CPR/first aid training they always told us to call 911 no matter what and let the person refuse directly to the police/EMTs. hard to do because you want to respect their choice.

Good info, will remember that.
