The Chainlink

Impatient, ignorant or just mad? Sheridan road again! I don't normally ride the big roads, Western,North ave. Past 94, Broadway...but it's a holiday weekend with little traffic but a woman had to tell me bikes weren't allowed on Sheridan as she waited for me to pass her so she could leave her building. 2 seconds and I'm on my way and so are you, so what's the big deal. As the pic shows not exactly bone crushing traffic.

The best way into Evanston is Clark IMO.  Turns into Chicago Ave.  Just be on the lookout for potholes and debris next to the CTA rail yard, and the cemetery. Recommend going fast. If you can stand going a bit west, Glenwood is pretty chill, up until Pratt where it runs alongside the train tracks. Then Greenview runs all the way to Jonquil (not the best neighborhood).  All that being said I do notice more and more cyclists using Sheridan for going into Evanston, and the drivers seem better than they used to be.

The 2013 Chainlink thread, "Aldermanic panel: Bike riders on Sheridan sidewalks pay $200 fine". Link here!

Stop thread hijacking, this is about road rage, not emerging culinary trends.

I think you're right. People don't obey traffic laws they just expect OTHER people to obey them! (or their interpretation of the law as it applies to their own interest at the specific time they think of it)

I just avoid that area altogether.  I don't go there, I don't ride through there, I don't shop or dine out there.

There are plenty of more welcoming areas around town to visit and spend my money in.

Clark to WB Howard to NB Custer works well, too. And if you're southbound, you can continue across Howard to SB Damen, which takes a few weird little doglegs but is generally pleasant to ride until it's interrupted at Pratt.

I have heard Asbury (I think that is the street a block or so east of Ridge in Evanston) is a great place to ride.  I have ridden it a few times coming home for an early morning group ride that ends/leaves in Evanston.

I do something similar, but I avoid the CTA rail yard and cemetery area.  I take Ridge to Howard.  Then, since Ridge in Evanston prohibits bikes, I cut over to Custer and take that up to Main, then take Chicago north from there.

Jeff, you take Ridge? Fhew. BHB on this guy.  So much traffic, and zero room between the right lane and the curb.

When IS that highly anticipated opening of Grant Achatz's Soylent Green?  Has anyone checked out Rick Bayless' To Serve Man yet??

I used to take that when I worked in Evanston. Chicago rd. is pretty bumpy as I remember and riding home next to the cemetery/el tracks in a largely unlit stretch is a little scary but it gets the adrenaline going.
