I would consider getting a new inner tube at this point...  I've had that happen before, on older tubes where the rubber was dry.  Has anyone actually fixed that when it happened?  that would be thrifty to the max.

Hm. Well the gold main part of the valve was still there I suppose, it didn't come out entirely, just the part at the top with the little screwy thing. Sucks because it's literally a brand new never ridden on tube, I had a flat and hadn't ridden since I was out of town this weekend. Oh well- if I do need a new tube no big deal I suppose, but super frustrating that I missed a glorious relaxing ride and was fifteen minutes late to work. Rough day.

If its a presta valve, you can screw the valve core back in and gently tighten it with a small wrench.  The top of the core has two flat sides for this purpose.  Ive had this happen to me several times;  if you are using a valve cap its more likely to happen if the cap is too small.

Same thing on the north side LFP.  It was an unfamiliar site after the brutal winter kept the "fair weather" rec riders inside for so long.   I did chuckle a little bit at how they were all bundled up while on apparent training rides, since I was very excited to commute my first day in shorts this season!!!! No leggings, finally!**

**I've been traveling for work for the past three weeks, so I unfortunately missed the warm up.  The last time I was able to ride there was still snow/ice on the beaches.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I can't imagine the valve core coming out with a Schrader (auto-style) stem. The wrench flats are 4.5mm. Not a common size, so a small crescent wrench will be your likely weapon of choice.

Oooo thanks! It is a presta valve. Do I even really need those caps? Is it advisable to keep them? They seem silly since they don't do anything really?

im guessing youd want them caps, but like was said, not if they are tight since that could result in the same thing happening... I always use em caps, I think if you don't cap em, dust and debree (how the heck do I spell debry) would compromise the airtightness of the seal when you tighten the valve closed, therefore your tube would not hold air as long... just a theory.  but you don't NEED need a cap.  However, you can get them in aluminum (or some metal that resembles aluminum to my pea brain) and pretty colors, so that's at least one reason.

Note to self: Find cute little colored caps! 

And IDK why they'd be tight - my bike's pretty new (got it in November brand new.)

Rule 60: 

You are not, under any circumstances, to employ the use of the washer-nut and valve-stem cap that come with your inner-tubes or tubulars. They are only supplied to meet shipping regulations. They are useless when it comes to tubes and tires.
