The Chainlink

Hey All!

First of all, I wanted to say thank you to all of those who responded to my initial post when I was shopping for a touring bike and seeking touring advice back in July. If you don't recall, I set out for my first bike tour on the Pacific Coast. Please check out my blog if you wish to read about my experience...

If anyone wants to chat more about bike touring, I'd love to hear other's experiences and places they've traveled via bicycle.

Amtrak is definitely the best deal for traveling with your bike, but the seats don't have head support for sleeping.  The other problem is not all stations have baggage stops so it limits your options.  I was originally planning to bike between Pittsburgh and Cumberland but ended up going through to Washington because they were the only baggage stops.  It was worth it, though.

I had forgotten to go back to see the last post.  It was fun and inspiring to travel vicariously with you.  Looking forward to seeing you around.

Fortunately, they recently did an Amtrak test run and will be expanding options soon(?). http://bikepgh.org/mb/topic/pilot-test-for-roll-on-bikes-on-amtraks...

Also, FWIW, if you take Amtrak from Chicago to Pgh, you will most likely have two seats to yourself. I have a terrible time sleeping in a moving vehicle and I still managed to get comfortable for a few hours of shuteye on that trip.
