My husband and I had our bikes taken from our garage in Logan Square (Kedzie and Armitage) Thanksgiving morning (or the night before). Please, let us know if you see them around. We don't own a car and they were our main transport, like many of you. Thank you for keeping an eye out. Also will be looking for some new used bikes if any are on offer. Thanks, Jen & Jason

So, I have a few questions.  I used to live near this exact area, and 3 years ago, my place got broken into over thanksgiving.  Do you live on Albany and is your landlord a musician?  If so send me a message.

sorry to see this. espcecially you being car-free. it sucks to have your 'cars' stolen and probably sold for less than a six-pack of beer. let's everyone keep our radars up for these two.

p.s. (to TehDoak : all landlords are 'musicians'. and all chainlinkers are **real** rockstars. he he he)

In stealing a bike, seems like the garage is the first spot thieves always go to, then the back stairs and finally boldly in the apartment.

What do you guys think? I am afraid to park my pony's in the garage now.

Since we have had our garage broken into in the past, our bikes are in our house.  I don't really care that they do not go with the decor. :-)  They can take my car--I have no emotional attachment to it.  I would be very unhappy if any of the bikes were stolen.

I usually don't do year-end stats until, well, the end of the year, but it did feel like we had a lot of garage thefts this year and so I wanted to check. And then I wanted to check something else and then the next thing you know I had year end stats as of December 1st. So here goes.

In 2012 there were a total of 1098 CSBR theft reports. As of today, we have 1128*.

2013

Type of Lock

No Lock 292 (25.89%)

Cable Lock 364 (32.27%)

Newer U-Lock w/Flat Key 118 (10.46%)

Heavy Duty Security Chain 23 (2.04%)

Other 308 (27.30%)

Where?

Locked to a Bike Rack 333 (29.52%)

Garage (191)/Storage Room (65)/Porch or Yard (147) 403 total (35.73%)

And my current favorite stat:

Locked to a Bike Rack with a single, newer u-lock w/Flat Key: 48 (4.26%)

Still pretty good odds, eh?

So comparisons to last year?

2012 saw 34.26% of theft reports for Garage (196)/Storage Room (67) /Porch or Yard (115) (378/1098)

No Lock 20.04% (220/1098)

Cable Lock 33.61% (369/1098)

*Hasn't been adjusted yet for Parts Thefts, which we receive in greater numbers, but which inflate the bike theft numbers by a percentage point or so.

Our bikes live in our apt too. Our garage is shared, and our babies are just too precious to take that risk! Sorry to hear about the loss. Hopefully they turn up!
