I'm hesitant to start a feud with teenagers but here it goes.

Four teenagers walked by my apt near Augusta/ Damen about 45 minutes ago. The one on the blue bmx bike stopped to look at my saddle, when I opened the window to ask him how he was doing he said, "Nice Brooks" then rode off. (He apparently already looked at my wife's bike and took the cover off of her saddle.) So I tracked them - with my helmet cam - to the Damen Blue line stop where three of them with the bike were standing around. Picture to follow soon.

Image with blurred faces and a pic of the bike. These are two of the kids but not the one that stopped to mess with my bike.

An image of the bike. They all appeared to be under 18 so I'm not going to post a pic of their faces. For those that are curious, I did not report this to the Police since they did not actually take anything off of my bike.

Also, I did not confront them though the image above makes it look like I did but I think they recognized my bike and they definitely noticed the camera on my handlebars. Arguing with teenagers was not on my "to do list" for the day. :)

I did not realize teenagers were into bike saddles.

For those who remember my post of a few months back it was teens who were caught in the act having just removed my bike wheel. We found an Allen wrench on one of the guys.  But my guess is they were selling the parts..not using the wheel. the kids you referenced above seem like they want the saddle for their own use.

Brooks saddles are the bees knees for the hipster fixie crowd. Keep yours on a short leash.

It seems like the Chicago Bike Sellers group on Facebook is where a lot of the brooks and wheels get moved. I bet these guys have profiles on there.

My wife's saddle is a VO Model 5, quite possibly more the bees knees than the Brooks. :)

Epoxy. I put it in every hex key hole. If someone wants to take the time to drill it out first then, well, they will need a lot of patience.

Correct me if I'm wrong but... then someone has to drill through it everytime you take the bike in for maintenance, right?

Correct, though I do most of our bike maintenance so it only inconveniences me. When I do take our bikes to the shop I drill it out before dropping them off, if it is a part that needs work.

I leave my bike outside year round so it is expected to get messed with but since I've used epoxy in the hex key holes I have not lost any parts (three years and counting but I prob just jinxed myself).

The youths could not have actually taken our saddles at that moment, it just happened to be that I was looking out the window when they stopped to shop on our bikes.

I encourage everyone to use epoxy or at least super glue and a ball bearing in the hex key holes.

Check out this article; even mentions crews of high school kids targeting Brooks saddles

^A thread I started here gets a shout-out in that article! :D

Dealing with teenagers is tough. You are rarely going to win an argument. I will keep my eye out for these "punks".

I think the OP and many people here are being dicks.

I regularly look at bikes I see locked up, I've noted the uptick in direct drive gearing, there is a new class of top tube bike bag (that is on top tube just back of the handle bars that I think is pretty great and I might get one) I learned about Ergon handle grips this way.  I don't read bike magazines so the only real way I learn about new stuff out there is to look at bikes and see what other people have - I scan locked up bikes everywhere, I do it all the time.

The fact that some young kids were looking at your bike and you took it upon yourself to follow / take pictures, post them and everyone was quick to brand them as thieves, "punks" and the like doesn't make you some do-gooder it makes you a cratchy old man with nothing better than to stalk and photograph kids and them post them online.  Nice pic of that kids ass - are you a pervert?  This posting is not heroic you (and many others) are falling short of the basic tenants of civilization along with it's aspects of guilt / presumed innocence and the like.

How about if some guy actually takes your stuff or messes with your ride you can get indignant but this piling on of kids WHO LITERALLY DID NOTHING is rather much a group of people being assholes.  And what argument would the OP have had? What did you have to argue about? You don't want people to look at your bike?

A particularly galling dick:

"It seems like the Chicago Bike Sellers group on Facebook is where a lot of the brooks and wheels get moved. I bet these guys have profiles on there."

Another

"I will keep my eye out for these "punks". - and just what are you going to do? are you going to follow them and post pictures as well?

For all the young kids (because I was one once and believe it or not - you were one once too) I grandly and overtly extend the invitation for many of you to go fuck yourselves.
