Quick update:
Got info that the June 19th court date may not be a Probable Cause Hearing after all.
May very well just be a hearing at which a Judge is assigned to the case, in which case it would only last a couple of minutes and would probably not be the place to make the biggest impact as an observer. I'll post an update when I know something more certain.
Jason
Another great job by Active Trans. If anyone is interested, Branden Kevenides invited me to speak at Tuesday (8/11) night's (6:30) discussion at REI. I will answer questions about, and can offer a quick tour of, the criminal justice system in Cook County as well as my best guesses regarding the Hamel prosecution, probable proceedings, and the likely outcomes. I am opposed to the on-line no plea-bargain petition, and will discuss this too, if asked.
I think this petition is ineffective and misguided, but as Jason explained, there are ways to be heard by the court.
Hello All,
As has been mentioned in another thread, as courtroom advocates it has been required that we not discuss details of what happened at each hearing, out of respect for the family. Even the most seemingly innocent comment can be potentially destructive or hurtful. So considering the sensitivity of the details of the case and out of respect for for the family, we'll err on the side of caution. Going forward I'll only be posting the most basic logistical update details here.
There have been a number of short procedural hearings at this point. On the 16th the driver was formally indicted.
The next date will be important for those who want to show support:
08/02/13
9:30 a.m.
Cook County Courthouse
Branch 66
Room 101
26th and California
This will be an Arraignment, This is the one in which a judge will be assigned and a large visible presence of Bobby’s supporters will make a strong first impression.
If you have not been trained as an advocate you may still appear as a member of the public.
Please note that the security line at that time of the morning is very backed up so it’s recommended that you show up by 9:00 a.m. so that we can all be rallied up by 9:30. I would also go ahead and schedule the better part of your morning off as there may very well be delays.
Note that you cannot bring cell phones into the building. There is a gentleman who runs a bag check out of a white van across the street from the courthouse for $2.00 and seems very reliable.
We'll be hosting a second training for courtroom advocates on either the 30 or 31st at the 18th District headquarters. If you are interested in participating please go to this doodle calendar schedule and indicate your preference (choose both if you have no preference). I'm closing the poll by end of the day on Tuesday the 23rd though so get your vote in quick.

If you’re interested there’s also an automated system available that you can call to get updates on the court case info with regards to location, date and time. The number is 877-846-3445. Individuals calling this number can simply enter the offender's Identification Record number, which is 2208764 and receive court location, date and time. In addition, the automated system gives the option for individuals to enter their phone number to receive updated court information.
Let me know if there are any questions.

I had the opportunity to meet Bobby Cann's family last Friday evening at their first visit to his ghost bike. Very moving. If you are in the courtroom for these hearings, please heed the above guideline: "as courtroom advocates it has been required that we not discuss details of what happened at each hearing, out of respect for the family".
thanks for sharing this ,,, very nice to see this here.

ARRAIGNMENT UPDATE for FRIDAY, AUGUST 2:
Bump. Please note that cell phones are NOT allowed in the building. If you try and bring a cell phone into 26th and Cal, you'll have to leave, drop it off somewhere and start in the security line again.

- As stated before, show up at least 30 min early as the line for security is longer in the morning.
- There may be delays so schedule off the better part of the morning.
- Dress appropriately (business casual)
- Pack light, cell phones are not allowed in the building. A DIY bag check is available across the street from the courthouse run by a fellow out of a white van for $2.00.
Hello Court Advocates, I am iGo-ing to the arraignment tomorrow a.m. - meeting in Ravenswood at 7:30am sharp. We have room for 3 if you'd like a ride (t-storms predicted, so I wussed). If you'd like to contribute a few bucks, that'd be cool, too.
Friend/p.m. me here on Chainlink.
Peace.
Sarah
Hello all.
The arraignment took place Friday. Approximately 55 supporters were there for Bobby and his family. A judge and a courtroom were assigned to the case, the defendants attorneys entered a plea of not guilty and the next court date of Sept 18th has been assigned. I'll post again after that date.

(Chi Lowe: could you change the title of this thread to something like "Bobby Cann courtroom updates"?)
Hello all. Today's hearing went relatively smoothly. Approximately 25 or so supporters, courtroom advocates, friends and family of Bobby's were in attendance. The State's Attorney has asked to revist the drivers bond so another bond hearing has been scheduled for next Monday, the 23rd, 10:00 a.m. Room 301 at 26th and California.
