Cyclists seem to have developed an extensive vocabulary all their own. Words like "Fred" and "shoaling" have isolated me from bikeless friends time and time again (not to mention their transportation preferences). However, it occurred to me today that I didn't have a word for when one's tire gets grabbed by a train track or other monstrous hole in the street, for example, the tire eating gap between the Blue Island bike lane and the road. Is there a word for this? Perhaps it's time to expand our repertoire as cyclists and invent some new jargon. I'd like a word for the much hated stop sign wave-through, too.

You're prodding it; let the communities develop on their own.

Has the chainlink ever come up with a new word?

Word.

Tire trap; tread gobbler; bead wedgee.

NoYuGo-NoUGo; Chicago Standoff; Idiot Stop.

the first word, or two words that come to mind when my front wheel gets trapped in a large crack is "OH SHIT"

I'm really not taking this seriously so much as I'm stuck at work and thought this could be a silly idea. :)

The BBC refers to the train track scenario as a "Dottie trap" and announces the hazard accordingly.

Other needed words:

A) There is a word in German word in chess Seitzfleisch that sometimes translates as "ass power" and it refers to the ability to sit down and endure for the length of a game that can be many hours.

I get a lot of information (road and bike conditions) via the saddle and I always though there should be a word or expression to cover it.

B) A word for the false positive that I sometimes feel of getting a flat.

C) A word for the gentle disdain I feel when I see a bike on the front of a bus which does not occur when there isn't a bike on the front, ie - I dislike bikers on buses more than pedestrians on buses.

I vote for bead wedgee!!

Umm, street suck?

What about the trip to the trail where I really don't want log 20 miles to get to my 30 mile trail? Or when the thunderstorm rolls in? Or I got the open door surprise on Sheridan and I need to give my knee a rest? I'm just saying, people are quick to judge why something is so.

I've been biking everyday for 7 years now and I have no idea what "Fred" or "shoaling" mean.

Fred: Someone who thinks they are a professional cyclist, dresses the part, owns a $5,000+ crabon fiber racing bike, etc. Commonly seen cutting people off on the Lake Front Trail.

Shoaling: Cutting in front of a line of bikes waiting at a red light. Commonly seen during rush hour on Milwaukee Ave.
