I got this bike from a kid I caught trying to steal my wheel outside dave's records yesterday. I grabbed him and bitched him out for a while waiting for the cops to show up. I decided to let him go but made him leave this ride with me. Rear wheel is a velocity aero. One of the seat stays is bent up. I assume some or all of this is stolen goods so let me know if it looks familiar.

Also, this kid was rolling aroung with those two young kids, high school age, that I see all the time around the LP LV area. You know who they are - they ride steel fixies with multicolored (pink yellow green blue) deep v's. One kid is white, skinny with short blonde hair. I look forward to seeing them again

thanks for intervening....is it me or are several of the spokes on the rear wheel bent ?

that in and of itself makes it a bit unique.

and is that a brooks saddle ? is it secured somehow (other than an allen bolt) ?

OK no more questions

If this bike wasn't reported to the Chicago Stolen Bike Registry, the Chicago Police Department, or one of the other National Bike Registries, you probably at least need to consider the possibility that YOU "stole" this bike.

Did you call the police? Did you wait for the police to show up? Did you tell them you had taken possession of the kid's bike? What did they say?

So you caught someone trying to steal your wheel and stole his bike instead?  I'm not saying it's wrong or that he'll call the cops on you, but that's kind of what it sounds like.

Sorry I will finish the story... I had dave call the cops before I went out to punk the kid out, so they were on the way. About 20 seconds before 3 suvs rolled up lights on and five cops jump out the kid ran away. I decided to be nice and let him choose his punishment. I told the officer everything, explained why i was holding the bike, made a report, gave ID, had witnesses. In the end nothing was stolen, this bike is forfeiture, more than likely wasnt even his bike.

I'm happy I didn't loose my front wheel. B43s laced (By Marcus) to AC new sheriff hubs, set me back more than 5 bills. The new sheriff hubs may have been the hero - long, tightly threaded bolts screw into the hub instead of bolts coming out of the hub with nuts on the end.

brooks saddle. I havent checked any bolts, seat could be fused, i have no idea not really touching it.

Thanks for the additional info. I'm glad you didn't lose your front wheel, or anything else, either. You should really try to get a serial number off that bike and see if you can find it on a registry, or with the police.

What we would all like to know is how you got 3 SUVs and five officers to respond to a report of a kid stealing a wheel from a bike? ;-)
