Okay, I am not Abigail Adams and you fellows out there are not John, but did I get your attention? Well, alrighty then, as they say in Colorado.
On March 23, 2013, a real grass roots group of us with green stains on our knees--mostly Chainlinkers, but others, too--are putting on an event by women to encourage women to bike.
http://www.thechainlink.org/events/women-bike-chicago-a-day-of-demo...
The idea is to let any woman who has any inkling that riding a bike might be a good idea for any reason whatsoever that she can do it and also to pass on information to help her do it.
Guys, you are not welcome to attend. I know you don't mean it, but you are often intimidating to women who are tentative about cycling. Maybe it's the attitude that it's no big deal? I don't know. But if you have a mother, sister, cousin, girlfriend, spouse, or any female relation who has even mentioned the possibility of getting on a bike, please tell her about this.
Women who already cycle, we are going to be looking for volunteers to help out with various parts of the day. And you all know other women who have said "I wish I could do that, but . . ." Tell them about this event.
It is free, and we will have some child care, but space is limited, so we need to have people make reservations. Pass on this link: http://wbikechi2013.eventbrite.com/#

Doug, you are right. As my perk for the Chainlink Tune-up I got the "Where to Bike" book by Greg Borzo and he actually has a section talking about women and biking that conveys that same message. How did we step back so far?

See the WTTW DVD "Biking Chicago Boulevards." It was classey for women to ride. Women are not new to biking and have been doing it for about as long as bikes have existed. That is why there are boys bikes with a straight top tube and girls bikes with a top tube bent downword to prevent embarrassing situations when mounting when wearing a dress or skirt which was popular back then.
I wish I could attend. I will be in St. Louis that weekend. Best of luck, the event looks great!
Sorry you cannot be there, but do tell anyone about it who might be interested. ;-)

Thank you! Look for the message I just sent you.

Registered. Would like to volunteer. Feel free to contact me.
In honor of International Women's Day, I am shamelessly bumping this thread. Thanks to all of you Chainlinkers who have joined the group, who have volunteered, and who have passed on the information to friends. With just word of mouth and little else our capacity is 43% filled! This weekend--at the bike swap and more--we are going to unleash the publicity machine. If you want to attend or have friends who want to attend: http://wbikechi2013.eventbrite.com/ to register.
Want a beautiful full color flyer to post somewhere? Stop by the Chainlink table or the CCC table at the swap tomorrow.
See you at the SWAP!
40 tickets remaining.

Hmmm, if I wear my hottest drag outfit, can I attend?

Don't forget about Dykes on Bikes. I'll bet they will allow straight female riders.
Our capacity is 2/3 filled! If you or someone you know is thinking about it, jump on this bandwagon!
I'm all for sharing folks the wonders of cycling :)
And yes, I actually was/do think "its not a big deal"... lol, I'll stay plenty far away.
Well it is okay if you wave as you ride by at 20 MPH! If you slow down for a minute, help encourage some women by sending them our way. ;-)
