Very sorry about the theft, Amber, but maybe we can learn something from your loss. How long was the bike parked there? Do you park it there often? Bike rack? Meter? Sign post? Other bikes? Other bikes tampered with?

Is it time for a stolen bike reg section for parts?!?  I'm mostly joking here, that may overwhelm the system and not be worth it.

I think it's time for a sting:)) Let's get the gang to chill out over there and keep watch. The gang could be just me and Paul.  We make a good pair and could scare off would be handlebar thieves.

The CSBR gets reports of stolen parts a few times per year. The biggest problem with parts is no serial number or any other uniquely identifiable feature.

Unburying this.

Gosh.  How much aluminum is on a bar and a brake lever assy?   5-6 beverage cans worth?  20 at the outside?  Cans are laying around in just about every garbage can

No, I think whomever ganked this was looking for something specific.  The bar or the brake might not have seemed special to Amber but for someone to go to the trouble of taking it off then there must have been something about it to be worth it for the thief who stole it other than a couple ounces of scrap value.  Either that or it was someone on a mission to piss off a random bicyclist.

I never met either of you, but might I suggest you both visit the bike fitting thread?

Speaking of which...

Chainlink Jerseys this year?

Cermak had some remodeling done to the front entrance last summer.  Instead of locking up in front of the doors, you now have to lock up on the side walk either to a couple of racks or the iron fence.  I chose to lock up to the fence since the racks are within reach from a car door.  I was only in there for maybe 10 mins.  I go there quite often.  That was the first time in over 5 years that I've had any problems there.  There weren't any other bikes when I went in, but there was one when I came out locked to the far rack, and it appeared to be intact.  There were people everywhere.

Thanks for the info. Those facts certainly make the selection of your bike seem pretty random. The thief had to be carrying around at the very least a cable cutter and allen wrenches. Again, very sorry.
