Beverly's annual criterium race is happening this Friday evening, and it's a great excuse to come south for the evening.  There's a festival with food, drink and entertainment (including beer from Argus and Sierra Nevada).  In recent years, we've seen a growing number of local racers in the action.

If you want to join in the fun, come on down!

This is always a great time.  I think it's like a massive block party that happens to be surronded by a bike race.

That's a good description.

By calling it a block party, I don't mean to down-play the race, which is a fast race with local, national and international riders competing.  But the community really supports this race and lot's of folks come out to watch. I'm brining my neice, who has never been a race before, because even if she doesn't like the crit, at least there will be plenty to keep her busy.

Well said.  The race is the real deal - cat 1 and 2 racers from all over the world, with some local teams represented.  The community supports the race in a big way, and the festival can be great fun.  Even better - it has ice cream from Rainbow Cone AND beer.

We're still planning on attending, despite the heat.  I cannot imagine racing in this weather.  Yuk.

I think it will be a very challenging night for the racers.

Heading out on ride down in the next hour or so.  Heat is a bit daunting, but Top Notch burgers, Rainbow Cones, and beer await.  That equation balances nicely.

Andrew, I'm curious about the route you plan to take down there.

My wife is riding from Humboldt Park to meet me in East Garfield Park.  From there we'll likely take Fulton--->California--->55th/W Garfield Blvd (or perhaps 47th)--->Damen--->Major Taylor Trail--->94th--->Hoyne (we're fueling up at Top Notch prior to heading to festival/race area).  Big thanks to Anne for confirming that our planned route was generally sound---we've ridden in Beverly before, but always after being near the lake and approaching from the East.

Thanks for the info.  I thought about leading a ride down to the race, and I test rode basically that route (with Anne's input - go figure) and a route using Racine.

I'm glad you guys could come.  I had a great time watching the race with you.  I think this year was a record for guys overshooting the corner and taking the over-the-lawn detour.  ;)

Three cheers for Randy Warren, the XXX racing team and the Beverly Vee-Pak racing team!
