My bike was just stolen this afternoon (July 2) from off my deck. No - it was not locked, but it was visible from within my apartment which was accessible only via a locked gate.

Some of you may recognize it from Ride of Silence or photos I've posted of it on BikeCommuters.com... please help me recover her!

The thieves left behind the u-lock and reflective triangle hung from the rack

Identifying features:

  • Schwinn Worldsport small frame (only 49cm at most)
  • full fenders - front fender mounted back behind brakes
  • bullhorn bars on a short raised stem
  • pink handlebar tape (which may not still be there)
  • bar end shifter on right of bars
  • aftermarket Chainboard brand chainguard
  • front pink Fyxation wheel
  • wheels were connected via locking skewers
  • green sticker on seat tube (down near bottom bracket)- as being registered with the City Of Evanston (via Northwestern Univ)

Plus since this photo -- a PINK front tire!

Ha.  I like your style, E A.  Should be easier to spot now though, right?  Good luck.

No report was received at http://stolenbike.org.

I spent over an hour on hold, first with 311 and then transferred about 6 times presumably within some police matrix,  trying to file a police report for a garage break-in the other day; finally was prompted to leave my contact info; no attempt to contact me has been made.  I recommend nobody even bother except late at night (e.g. after midnight.)

Re: Swap O Rama-- your best bet of someone seeing it there and contacting you would far and away be by placing a report at the Chicago Stolen Bike Registry.

Toro is the nickname I gave this bike when I put the bullhorn bars on her... it's not actually identified as "Toro" in any other way.

I know there's a Swap-O-Rama tomorrow down at 4200 S. Ashland... I hope to go early to scope it out.

There it is, thanks.  I double/triple checked but was looking for a TORO...  would be interested to know what that means.

Not that getting your bike stolen doesn't suck enough, but finding evidence that the thief unceremoniously ripped all your accessories off and tossed them over their shoulder triple-sucks.

BTW-- of all the victims posting here of their intent to hit Swap O Rama over the weekend, I have not had evidence that any actually did go.  Oddly I ended up there on Saturday and made a complete walk-through (looking for the stuff from my garage.)  Didn't see much in the way of desirable bikes; called a few in to Kevin to check against the registry but no hits.

I was able to successfully file a police report!

Earlier in the day I had left a message for the police to follow-up with me...and they did, too! (but after I had gotten in touch with someone over the phone)

this is the bike left behind (with a missing right pedal)... i think the thief swapped it out for my ride...

And the full story is up at BikeCommuters.com:

But... where will she be if someone rode off on her... ???
