The bridge replacement is finally set to start next week. Halsted at approximately 1100 N will be closed to all traffic for the next year.

While I am glad that this sorry excuse for a bridge is replaced, I am also wondering why the new bridge will be four lanes (plus bike lanes)? Halsted north or south of this bridge is two lane....

Elston will make a nice detour in the mean time. CDOT is in the process of adding protected and buffered bike lanes from Milwaukee to North Ave.

I tried it northbound last night. While there was a concrete layer installed on the bike lane, it was cordoned off for no apparent reason, forcing northbound riders to ride over the grated bridge. Not fun

I'm sure it will be nice once it is complete, but in the meantime I'll avoid it.

How is Halsted now? I heard something about a bit of recent construction near Webster.  Is that done?  Is there any other construction between Webster and Hubbard?

There is construction on the Halsted overpass (over Kinzie and RR tracks) from Green to Wayman. There's one lane in each direction, and both directions are sharing the northbound side of the median. As is typical, there is no accommodation (space or signage) for people who are bicycling.

This is in addition to the awful pavement under the viaduct on Halsted at Hubbard.

I don't think there's any other construction from there to Webster (except for maybe some spot construction that I didn't pay much attention to).

Good to know.  Thanks!

Even before this work ( @ the tracks ) began, I'd always use a Halsted bypass: one street west,  Green St. [ detouring via Fulton and then to Grand or Elston ].  So much more civilized and the RR crossing is not too bad, just 3 Metra tracks.

I found this years ago and use it exclusively. It works wonderfully. Crossing Grand can take a little of extra time, but it's worth it. Easy to get to Milwaukee, too.

If you want to get to UIC without going on Halsted (which has a lot of lights), take Green and Peoria Streets.

This works to get to Kinzie, too--avoids getting over under the viaduct to make the turn. Of course, you do have to go up the hill from Green to Desplaines. :-)
