Wow, I moved to Chicago during Bike to Work Week and it's amazing to see it grow every year.  Huge props to all of the smaller businesses and organizations who are donating their time, staff, and resources to the pitstops next week.  They're not linked, but you can find them listed here!

Thanks to Active Trans for putting this all together!  I heard WBEZ, the Old Town School of Folks Music and Center for Neighborhood Technology trash talking each other today about who would win their non-profit category this year.  Funny stuff.  My work, the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services will participate this year (but Gabe & Dept of Transportation will undoubtably rule our category).

Haha, yeah, I was listening to WBEZ today too....after listening to it, I put together a last minute team for The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Should be a fun week!

YAJ,

Did you organize your office's team? Do you work at the facility on Ogden? I work at 2FM (N&T) and, with the exception of a couple of people who ride in the summer in good weather, have for years been the only person in the building who rides to work. It never really even seemed worth it to me to try to get other people here to do it!

On Monday, I was approached by an admin at work and was asked if I wanted to be the ambassador for Bike to Work Week for our office. I declined and was asked why. I told her that we lack parking for our bike as it is around our building, and if I were to advertise to people at work here about Bike to Work Week, imagine how many people will come and we'll have to stack our bikes on top of another, and sometimes I like to bring my nice bike to work and I don't want it to get any scratches. And if any of these fair-weather riders come to work with their nice bike and get scratches on them, do you think they'll continue to do that the next day? And, I have a special spot that I know always has one spot left by the time that I come in and I'd like to keep it that way.

So, she said she understood and left. But on Wednesday morning, she pulled me aside and told me that all summer long, we have been given a green light to park our bikes at a nearby parking lot that the company has worked out a deal with. This morning, the twelfth person just signed up and we'll have group lunch ride everyday next week.

If I keep being an a-hole, maybe next, I'll get  all year long parking, and next I'll ask for a shower at work :)

+1

I see what you did there!

Wow, that's cool!!!

I haven't had the chance to set up a team at my coldwell banker office yet and last year we even were a paid sponsor. Opps.

I knew that forgetting to renew my ATA membership would pay off! Now I can score a free T-shirt for doing something I was going to to anyways!

I tried to organize a team for my office since I am the only person who commutes by bike. I managed to get these responses:

1-Yes, I'll ride, it sounds like fun;

2- I will try maybe once or twice, but I'll have to drive my car to the lakefront path and ride the rest of the way on bike since it is scary to ride to the path from my house (I see this as a semi-win);

1- I'll wave to you in my car when I pass you by; and,

1-I'm too out of shape to ride.

The rest of my office has yet to respond, although I know there is one guy who likes to ride, but his wife told him it is too dangerous to ride on the streets now that they have a kid (but it wasn't before he got married, go figure).

Even if it's just one person, it helps our cause to have more teams signed up...there's still time!

(and you get the cool free Team Leader technical fabric T-shirt). http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150857617504872&set=a....

Thanks much,

Ethan Spotts, Active Trans

I get a free t-shirt? Really? Oh darn, I missed the pick-up date. Oh well, still commuting to work next week. At least I have one person signed up. :)

You can still pick up shirts at our office, Melanie! Thanks for signing up!
