Every so often I see a common human behavior that I think deserves its own name. Whenever I see someone who is waiting at a bus stop step out into the street to look down the street to see if the bus is coming, I think 'buspecting.'

Every day, when I am stopped at a red light with other cyclists, many of them will gaze eagerly up the street to their left at crossing traffic. They are not waiting for an opening so they can run the red light, they are just....well, I'm not sure, exactly. But I think this habit deserves its own name. Let's hear some suggestions.

And if there's any other behavior or trait that you see commonly in the city, throw it in this thread, too.

You've heard of star gazing, perhaps they are car gazing.

Watching for the light to turn yellow for crossing traffic so they can prepare to go when it turns green and not get run over by the impatient cars behind them?

James,

No, when I see this people are definitely looking at traffic, not at the light. Sometimes they will switch directions a few times. I see it in all sorts of situations, incl. when there is a marked lane through the intersection, and others when cars behind you aren't an issue. And sometimes, for all that they appear eager to go, their r/t when the light actually turns may be really slow! :)

Ken, 'car gazing' is good!
