looks like the driver was avoiding the tree rather than trying to take out a cyclist. may have been more of a case of over-correction.

Both riders somehow got back on their respective bikes and finished the stage, but the chance to win a stage in the TourDeFrance was stolen from them yesterday by a media driver who was out of position and disobeying the orders given by the race director over race radio.

Very true!  In that case, is there even a word that would describe a driving paparazzi person?

While I agree with the conclusion, these weren't paparazzi.  The car was part of the France Televisions crew filming the race.
