I bit it hard on the lake yesterday morning. I also bit it Saturday evening on Clark, right south of Bryn Mawr. The only redeeming outcome of Sat's wipeout was that several folks in cars slowed down afterward to see if I was OK.

But I wiped out both on my right and left sides, and now I have a matching set of bruises!
Seriously. Whatever money is saved on salt is going to be spent on emergency response personnel having to show up at more than the usual number of accidents on winter roads. It's pretty ridiculous that even main roads aren't being appropriately cleared. While this only makes it slightly more difficult for drivers, it makes it downright dangerous for us two-wheeled commuters.

My spill was on a side street a week or two ago- took a turn slowly and had my rear wheel slide out from under me. Luckily I just kind of sat down and slid on the ice- my bag took most of the fall, so I really made out well.

But I have a set of studded snow tires ready for installation right now as well, so hopefully a bit safer for the rest of what appears headed for a bad winter.
I did last wednesday. I have had a nasty bruise by my knee that just starting having feeling in it again.

I just learned to ride slow and stop skidding like an idiot.
No skids on ice, going down hill. I bit it doing exactly that on Randolph and the river last week. Thought I would avoid the bridge(because those things give me the howling fantods) up on the sidewalk turned into a skating rink on my down slope. I saw it and thought "skid the whole way down"... bad idea.

No worries though. If your going to ride in this shit your going to fall in this shit. Just get right back on.
I nearly broke my ass on the first snowfall last week monday on a completely ice covered section of w. superior. I marveled to myself about how I hadn't fallen yet. Immediately after the bike just threw itself out from under me and I landed square on my bum.
can we see evidence? I love black and blue marks! I have one on my back, but its from falling down my stairs...

I hope Deadhex gave your knee a big feel better kiss!

I bit it earlier today while walking with my bike along Lake St between Green and Peoria. The south sidewalk was COMPLETELY ICED OVER! So I proceeded to do what ice wants you to do - fall over - to the right and bend a crank.

My hybrid's crankset was getting old (2 years!). It was time to replace it anyway.
A tip for those who gave in and got studded tires.... our shoes aren't, so be careful getting off your bike!!

and yea... I bit it too! But already you can hardly tell that I broke my poor nose! (I fell while riding on ice, not getting off my bike!) I just don't want to smash it again!
holy shit! Hope you'ew ok.

I bought it in the Alley behind Handlebar. I could see that I was on a solid sheet of ice, but for some reason failed to recognise, or remember what ice beneath you means. While skiing, you can ususlly just shoot over ice or cut into it with the side of your skis. Of course a bike is not a pair of skis. before I quite realised what had happened. my bike slipped out from under me to the right, and I fell left.
I'm sure I made a satysfying Thump when I hit the ground. I swore, then laughed. then got up and continued on my way. I broke the edge off of my left pedal. (third time this year! I just have no luck with my left side.) but I wanted to get some new pedals anyway.
Sorry Cliff Man. ;-( You have no pedal luck. ;-(
