A friend just told me about this website called rentabike.com.  It gives a list of bike shops that rent out bikes. I'm not sure if the bike shops need to pay to be on the site, but at the very least it's a good idea.

Hey Julie, Thanks for the comment on my new bike. I checked out the website for rentabike.com and it looks like something interesting for when you're traveling.
If anybody knows of a place that rents cargo bikes locally, that would be good to know. I was hoping to be able to search by 'bike type' on this site but no dice.

I would definitely use a rent-by-the-hour cargo bike operation and encourage others as an alternative to Zip Car, etc.
+1 on Cargo Bikes.

I'd love to see a website that also catered to trailers as well as cargo bikes

Most of us already own bikes. Renting one while on vacation is a cool idea. But I'd love to be able to rent a cargo bike or a trailer for those times when my baskets are too small to carry what I need.

What a great idea! I've rented bikes on vacation several times, but had to spend time doing research online and making phone calls. This would certainly streamline the process. Too bad they don't have any Toronto locations in their network yet.
I like the cargo idea too as an alternative to car sharing which is what i do when I have an errand that requires heavy stuff.
I've had several occasions where I just wanted to use a trailer or cargo bike for a day. Living in the city my storage options are limited, so its hard to justify paying a lot of money for a quality trailer that I would use 5 times a year. being able to rent a trailer or cargo bike would be nice. I would love it if local bike shops offered trailer rental.

I think that Jon Lind at JCLind at 1131 N Wells, just south of the Village Cycle Center and Wells Automotive, would probably have a cargo bike to rent. He used to rent out Fietsfabriek bikes. He has a bunch of useful bikes at his shop including a really versatile cargo trike and he's friendly and helpful. Send him a note or give him a call. http://www.jclindbikes.com/contact

The problem with trailer rentals, is that anything larger than a kiddy trailer usually requires a dedicated hitch mount. They are not expensive, about $30-40, but take time to install. Then there is the liability issue. If the trailer, of any kind, is installed on a jacked up bike that wrecks, the person that rented out the trailer could be held liable.
@Allen Wrench- thanks for mentioning our shop, J.C. Lind Bike Co. We sell cargo bikes and we are open to renting them also. We don't advertise as a rental shop but we are flexible so if you are interested, please come by and check us out.
I have a trailer I lend to people I know and trust (liz that includes you :)) .

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind next time I need to haul stuff :)

I do like the idea of renting out cargo bikes or having a cargo "bike share" program as an alternative to zip car/igo

Cargo, and penny farthing rentals too! :) man, if we went on a tweed ride all on penny farthings that would be awesome. Of course, I can't imagine there would be enough rentals to justify the investment, but i can dream.
