This is a vision I have for fast and safe long distance commuting for bicycles using enclosed tunnels that provide a back draft for smooth cruising. The elevated tunnels also act as a solar panel array during peak daylight hours protecting riders from the heat by darkening and producing electric and solar heated water to power up environmental controls at each hub.

Each hub has vertical and horizontal windmills that bring in airflow and condition the air. The Hub acts as a stuctural support and service/entry point. The entire system needs and feeds trees and plant life to maintain a botanical experience and provide organic struture. Surrounding trees provide support for the long spans of tube.

It is possible to build such a system. Older examples of awesome engineering feats are The Great wall of china, the Hoover Dam and most importanly the Golden Gate Bridge.

How do we as a society go about building a more efficent transport system without having to rely on depleting and polluting resources?

I guess I will have to learn on how to properly post stuff up. Dammit! The pictures did not come up the way I wanted it to.
I tried a second page.
I absolutely love this idea. This would allow for riders to commute year round more easily.
My wife has asthma and she is unable to ride her bike if it is below 60 degrees. If this idea was in play she could ride all year. I also would not have to rebuild a rusty salty bike after every winter.
Hopefully more people would be inspired to ride period.
Were you able to see the pictures? Year round long distance commuting would be soooo nice. I agree with having to rebuild the bike after every winter. That is why I try to take public transportation when it is too slushy out there. Maybe CTA or RTA would be interested in this idea.

On days like today, I would love to be able to come to and fro from the city to its outskirts. Protected from the rain, making my arrival to my destination not smelling like a wet dogg.
