Spring/Summer 2010 Trail Conditions

North Branch Trail (around the stables on March 9): Still snowy and slushy, but thawing.

Does anyone know what condition the Tinley Creek Trail is in? Would it be rideable after Open Streets in Oak Forest on Saturday?

Checked out Salt Creek yesterday, parked by the zoo entrance on 31st. Twas clear and promising for about 3/4 mile, then I hit bad ice, slush. Exited onto 26th and did surface streets. I think the trail will be clear by Friday, I will hit it again and check back. Felt great to be out!

DPR is a mess in both Cook and Lake county-mushy in all areas, flooding by most underpasses. McClory bike path is the same-soggy, unrideable and some patch areas of ice and snow. Tried to ride this the other day and got no where. Guess everyone is going to have to stay on the roads for the next week or two. Granted most roads are potholed, cratered, and not all that fun to ride, but it beats staying inside.

I checked out the north end of the Major Taylor Trail (83rd St./Dan Ryan Woods to 95th St.) on Wednesday. Snow-free, with some tree debris (twigs) in the woods and small amounts of broken glass near 95th (2 bottles on 1/2 mile of trail - easily avoidable). I hope to check it out south of 105th in the next few days.

Last Saturday I scouted out the River Park/North Shore Channel path starting at Lawrence for my fair-weather commute. Clear of snow all the way to Touhy, as far as I got cause I didn't feel like doing a double to Green Bay and back. Look out for the bends around the baseball fields just south of Bryn Mawr. Chunks of the trail gone, but still plenty of room to ride.

This morning I rode the Major Taylor Trail from 105th to 115th. The trail was dry and mostly clean. Found a small amount of broken glass and dog poop, also easily avoidable. I'm hoping to ride down to Whistler Woods sometime in the next week and check out the rest of the trail. Anyone want to take a ride?

Rode north loop of Tinley Creek, March 12, last of ice gone. The rest of the trail should be Ok. See you at the ATA tent near Waverley Ave. Sat. at the Open Streets.

Saturday, March 13: The North Branch trail (mile 0 to 8) is wet, but rideable. The path could use a few brooms, but other than small sticks, the path is clear. NO SNOW.

Centennial/I & M Canal Trails clear and road-bike ready. My God, it must be spring!

I just did the full loop on the north branch trail, there are some muddy spots and twigs galore, but in generally ridable condition for a road bike. The loop west of botanical gardens is the worst, looks like there was some flooding there, but again ridable. I deleted the other thread Ryan, sorry for the duplication.

Okay, have to issue a bug alert. Swarms of gnats or some other exuberant and newly hatched insects on the second leg of the Centennial Trail (from the industrial break to the Swing Bridge). Clouds of them, and they are unavoidable. I just removed the remains of one or several from my right eye in the shower. Like something from a really cheesy horror film.

We ran into the same thing on the Salt creek trail today, my buddy got nailed in the eye as well with a gnat. There were also very loud chirping frogs or crickets along the low lying wet areas. Very neat. There was also an abundance of mallards floating around in the flooded grassy areas. Trail is full of stick debres frome tree removal over the winter, but it is of no consequence, what a nice day!

I might ride without my pants tommorow!

You see any snakes or turtles out yet? Saw my first turtle the other day in Zion at IL State Beach. He went running out in front of me. Snakes hopefuly will be out next week. Gnats up here also, black swarms of the criiters. Had to comb them out of my beard. Spring peepers out in force last night also. Glad winter is over at last.
